    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The job itself was initially beyond my capabilities in that a lot of the time I had to wait for the people in my team to have time to help me or take me through what needed to be done. When people in my team had time the role itself was very enjoyable and interesting.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone has a set role in the team but as an intern for a month it can sometimes feel like you don’t necessarily have a place in the team. That being said everyone in my team was really friendly and always invited me to various work events outside of work which was nice.

    2/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • When asked everyone in my team would help me. In particular a recent graduate helped a lot with learning skills he knew would help me throughout and after uni. A lot of the excel skills I have today are because of what I learnt during this month internship which was a great foundation to build on.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Not very busy at all as once the work allocated to me was done I had free reign to look// shadow anyone I wanted to. This was eye opening and intruguing to see what it’s truly like to work in such a big company and how all the decisions made in head office filter down to businesses

    1/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Not much responsibility in that everything I did had to be checked over to make sure it was correct. However, given my limited experience this was completely understandable as the decisions made could have a massive impact on profit and revenue so this limited responsibility made sense to me which made it okay.

    1/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Excel skills will be very helpful in both an undergraduate role after uni and also during uni some of my coursework modules will be much easier given the previous experience with Whitbread. Alongside this hands on experience in finance has given me a better understanding of what a job in this field would feel like.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Office was a nice cool open environment that allowed everyone to concentrate and work hard. There was lots of places you could go to have a break such as costa and the canteen which was good to get away from the office as it meant you could progress with your work.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It wasn’t a pre organised internship in that I requested the opportunity to work for a month so there was no set schedule in terms of what I would be doing or how I would progress in the role. But it was organised in that the package was great and the pay was good considering Im not a graduate.

    1/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Not much investment into me was made however this wasn’t that much of an issue as to have such a great company on my CV was more than great enough and having this experience has also confirmed to me that I would like to get a role in finance as this is where my interests lie.

    1/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing in that the company is a great one to work for. The benefits for working for the company are great and also to have a graduate role there would be a lot more interesting and fun in that the role would give me a lot more responsibility and tasks.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were quite a few graduates who had recently started the job however there were not that many interns that hadn’t yet graduated. A lot of the employees had been at the company for quite a considerable amount of time which meant that socially there were already predetermined groups which wasn’t ideal but it was expected.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost wise the area was pretty standard. Lots of shops and places to eat and drink which was handy. Also the area is pretty well developed which is nice and the area is safe and okay to travel around which makes it ideal particularly if you are looking to move nearby.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I wouldn’t know as I didn’t really go out during this month

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 3/5
