The Role
I really enjoyed the placement. the work i was doing was interesting and varied.
Despite my lack of experience my colleagues were friendly and always willing to impart their knowledge.
I was given plenty of support by my line manager and the other members of the engineering team and in the very few cases that they couldn't help i was pointed in the right direction.
As with most jobs the workload varied but the majority of the time i had work to do with a clear deadline.
I was given an adequate amount of responsibility and felt that my work added value to the company.
The knowledge i have gained in this placement will prove invaluable in my future career as an engineer especially in getting a job as a graduate.
The Company
The atmosphere was well balanced. Everyone knew when to stop and to get on with work but also knew when we could have a laugh about something.
The general organisation was good. there were only a few minor points to improve upon that could be easily ironed out.
My colleagues were always willing to help me develop my knowledge and i managed to get on a few training courses as well.
Initially prospects look good as a graduate engineer for a job but to progress though the company it looks as though you would have to move into management.
The Culture
Among fellow students the social scene was quite poor as most were placed about 4 hours away. This seems to be similar with all engineering placements. Among work colleagues the age gap was significant and due to where my rented accomodation was the possibility of socialising was restricted.
Hull is quite cheap as a city.
My accomodation was next to hull uni so there was plenty to do.
There was a sports league being set up as i left.
