    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I don't have any real complaints about the work itself, though getting used to regular hours left be a little drained for the first few weeks. The commute was another bore - coming from university when nothing was more than 15 minutes away.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The people were great - everyone was very helpful and patient. I very quickly felt like part of the team and is was clear they all got on very well.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor was friendly and approachable as well as being interested in the work I was doing. He obviously cared a lot about the team's success and welfare.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were one or two days when I'd finished a large section of work and the next hadn't arrived yet when I felt at a bit of loose end, but there weren't very many of these.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Lots. People joke about the interns just making the coffee or doing photocopying but I ended up contributing significantly to the development of tools which members of my team will be using on a daily basis.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • While I may not end up using the technical skills I acquired (most were quite task specific) I feel strongly that I've gained a lot of use; How to interact with people in a work environment, time management and punctuality.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There's a limit to how exciting an office can be, everyone in my team got on well, so while the conversation wasn't constant it was quite frequent and friendly.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There were a few teething difficulties getting in touch with my line manager, which meant the first few days were a little stressed. The induction week was extremely busy and in my view the days were too long. However, once I started at my desk I had lots to do and soon settled down into a steady routine.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a day with a 'life coach' type person during the induction week - I'm quite cynical about such things and honestly would have preferred to start at my desk a day earlier. That said, the provision was made - hence the 6. There was a single volunteering even which was good fun and also pulls up the rating.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Healthcare from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was initially quite off the idea, but looking back, if I don't go into academia I would like to work at UBS in future.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There wasn't much of a social scene to speak of. The company did arrange plenty of networking events but most were in the first week, before everyone had settled in and thus felt a bit forced.

    1/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London - so prices were high, I was lucky to find a cheap room in a good area which took the pressure off. Get used to not getting much change back from £5.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Well, London, so the night-life is great. That said I went home or visited friends from uni most weekends so perhaps didn't get out as much as I should have done.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I was left quite tired by my work, so there wasn't much prospects for weekday evenings, but a few people did sports after work. Weekends were free.
