The Role
I had a really great time on placement with Savills. There were lots of projects and site visits for me to get involved with as well as the chance to work on my own individual projects. I would have given a higher rating but there was the rare occasion when I had nothing to do. This is entirely understandable however as the team is busy with their own commitments. My team were more than happy to provide me with useful reading material however so that I could be productive with my time.
The team was fantastic and really went out their way to get me involved in MatRICS socials . They put a lot of effort into making me feel welcome.
Everything was overseen and I felt comfortable asking for help and advice from my team who were more than happy to talk me through any problems I had.
As mentioned earlier there was the odd occasion when I had no work as such - particularly if there were no planned site visits - but the office had a wealth of resources for me to read and research and the team were happy to show me these.
I was definitely given a significant amount of individual work that I could complete - thoroughly checked of course by a supervisor. I could definitely see that the work I was completing was actual project work and would benefit the client.
Sometimes there is a very large gap between what you learn at university and putting it into practice in real work situation. My placement at Savills has been invaluable and even if I've not been actively working on a project myself, there has been a great opportunity to ask a lot of questions and learn about aspects that probably would have not been taught in great detail on my university course. The team have really helped me progress my knowledge of the industry and have also been on hand to give me advice about working in the field as well.
The Company
My team were a very sociable bunch and worked very well together. I was introduced less to other departments so I cannot comment on the office as a whole.
Head office put together a significant amount of effort getting together logging in details, email accounts etc. I was also provided with Savills stationary to help me on site visits. There was no set structure to my placement as such but it was very hard for my team to know what projects they would have on. Nevertheless, my team were very keen on getting me involved with the projects they had so this more than made up for the lack of set structure as such.
My placement team were brilliant in getting me involved in new things and projects so that I could get a better hands on experience. I also attended socials as part of my placement which was great to deevlop interpersonal skills with other people in the profession.

I would certainly apply for the graduate scheme. I have learnt a great deal about the company and would want to pursue a career with them. They invest a lot in their people and help them grow and deevlop as surveyors.
The Culture
Other graduates in the company were very friendly and very keen to get me involved with socials. I did not really met the other student on placement with the company.
I did not note that cost of socialising was any different to any other city. The cost of living was perhaps expensive but that was down to a poor choice of accommodation on my part.
Southampton is a good student city with plenty of nightlife.
My team were very keen to get me involved with MatRICS socials and I was very glad that I got involved. My team also invited me out to social activities with just work colleages. They were very friendly and welcoming.
