    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I would arrive for briefing in the morning and plan out the days activities. These mostly included setting out, tracking and compiling data, uploading forms and as-built evidence. I would take action each day to ensure the site is running as safely as possible. There would often be training or seminars to attend, allowing me to expand my learning and skillset. The company placed great importance on helping staff grow and expand professionally.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • The company offered a wide range of training opportunities. Including sponsoring my CSCS test and training, First aid at work and Manual Handling. There were also a wide range of personal development webinars helping me to expand my knowledge of the industry and professional environment. Also, through a number of days shadowing different professionals, I learnt a lot about day to day work and many skills including setting out, health and safety, quantity surveying and procurement.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility at work that I was happy with. After some weeks, I was given tasks to carry out on my own and was even allowed to make some decisions based on my understanding. This all served to give me a greater satisfaction with my impact and the importance of training and trusting young engineers was never understated.

    Support & Guidance

There were also a wide range of contacts provided who could help me with any questions of queries I had about my placement. Overall, there was ample support and I never felt that I was unable to find the answer to my questions.
