    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Being part of the engineering team and conducting surveys, as-builts and setting out work for subcontractors. Assist with package management of subcontractors. General site safety activity’s to keep the site safe. Helping the site management team with controlling the site by conducting inductions, creating site plans and displays.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Developed engineering software skills as well as being able to use a surveying total station machine confidently onsite. Learnt particular management and communication skills with other team members and also subcontractors on site as being part of the main contractor team.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was a key part of the engineering team where I was given many responsibilities and jobs. One was to help package manage a core drilling subcontractor onsite successfully. As well as this being a site engineer to set out work for contractors whilst creating surveys and as-builds which help the site/project management team with handovers and work completions.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received support from team members that were part of the engineering and site management team. I worked on 2 different sites over the year and was supported heavily in both. I was given responsibility’s but support was always there if needed and I received guidance from all types of members like graduate engineers or my line managers or other site members. They were all very helpful and supportive.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • There was a large team on both sites and there was a great working environment within both teams. Everyone was welcoming and would give up time to support you if needed. All members were friendly and very easy to talk to about anything.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I had a great time over the 12 months I was with Sisk whilst working in Wembley and Milton Keynes. I learnt a great deal, much more than I ever thought I would. When I was given various responsibilities I felt confident in carrying these out and if I needed support anytime I could receive it from other team members.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to John Sisk and Son Ltd
  • Try and take advantage of the training available that Sisk offered. Whilst on the placement explore the different site roles and departments like engineering, site management and design. This way you can learn a great deal from many people and feel more confident in your own role onsite and in your career prospects.
