    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was assigned to a practice group with a supervisor and trainee buddy. I did a variety of tasks, such as writing client briefs, responding to client enquiries, making letters of advice, doing large research tasks, making bundles, etc. These were given by my supervisor or by other members of the department. There was also a group assessment with other members of my cohort, along with written assessments that were given to all of us.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I brushed up on my legal research skills and my general time management, since doing all of these tasks within one week was quite hectic (but I managed). I also got to test out my own interpersonal skills throughout the week since it also involved lots of proactive networking with members of the department, who were all very keen to answer any questions I had about my tasks or the firm itself.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • We were given very thorough insight into each of the departments within the firm, the type of work they do, and the type of clients they work with. This helped us get an idea of the seats we could train in, and what the responsibilities of being a trainee would entail.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture of the firm was relaxed and approachable, with everyone from different levels of seniority being keen on getting to know the vacation schemers and having coffee with us. They were all clearly close and friendly with each other, which was balanced out well by how serious everyone took their work throughout the day outside these interactions.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mishcon de Reya
  • Make sure to communicate and have very clear set of reasons as to why you believe the firm is right for you, and do your best to expose yourself to any of their virtual and/or in-person events. Their Open Day was what helped boost my application to the firm, since it told me so much more about them than what I could've done through independent research alone.
