    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • Each individual was assigned to a particular practice group, with which they spent the entire week. We also had the opportunity to learn about all of the firm's major departments and talk to current trainees about life at the firm. It offered a very useful insight into what life is like on a daily basis and what kind of work trainees undertake.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I enhanced my drafting skills, which I have continued to use at my current place of work. Also, the group assessment was a good opportunity to develop collaboration skills in a time-sensitive and pressured environment.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • The unique insights I gained were invaluable to understanding more about the firm and why it was so attractive as a place to work and grow in law. The work that the firm does is varied and of the highest quality.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture and atmosphere were terrific. In addition to being friendly, everyone clearly enjoys what they do and, even in high-pressure environments, manages to strike a good work-life balance. People in law are frequently overworked and overstressed, so it was refreshing to see a working environment in which people take their work seriously and produce high quality results but still value the happiness of themselves and those around them.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I was not expecting to enjoy the vacation scheme as much as I did. Although the firm was high up on the list of firms at which I wanted to train, the vac scheme catapulted it to the very top. The scheme gave me opportunities to work on live matters and, simultaneously, to learn more about the work of different departments and about the overall culture of the firm.

  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mishcon de Reya
  • Don't stress about always finding the right answer to every question with which you're confronted (particularly in the in-person interviews and vacation scheme assessments). It's not always about getting the right answer, rather about how you think under pressure and whether you can explain your views in an articulate and logical way (even if they aren't technically exactly correct). It sounds cliched but it is true.
