    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I mostly focus on writing an assigned research report, finding data to support the research and visualising the data in Excel, which is my most used application. I also support lead analysts in their credit research by collecting data and visualising it for them.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes! My Excel skills improved significantly over the course of my internship, and I am now able to use it without the mouse. I also learned a lot about Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint, such as things like VBA. I have received a lot of training on the credit ratings process for several industries. I've also learned a lot about networking and business acumen through trainings and day-to-day exposure to Moody's employees.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. On my team, I was allowed to write a large, 3,500 word research piece with a large degree of independence. I frequently met with senior members of my team who provided input and advise, but they gave me the freedom to carry out the bulk of the work during the project. At times, I also helped carry out very important data collection and data cleaning that went towards high-level credit ratings processes.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Quite a lot. The first five weeks were jam packed with trainings, which were helpful. I also received a lot of help from my colleagues for more nuanced things, like correctly formatting charts with Moody's guidelines. Senior members of my team were very helpful in providing advice for my research piece.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • People are very polite and respectful at Moody's. It's a very civilised environment. I got the sense that my team genuinely cared about my wellbeing, and they often told me not to work late - I appreciated their help in getting me to have a healthier work-life balance. The culture is more collaborative than competitive, as we aren't deals focused.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Thoroughly. It has been rewarding, interesting, and meaningful. My team always found ways to keep me busy, without overloading me with work. I've learned a lot of skills, made a lot of connections and learned a lot about the credit ratings space. I feel quite lucky to have found a job that is both enjoyable and interesting at the starting point of my career.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Moody's
  • Don't treat it like an investment bank. At Moody's, you don't get ahead by working late and being competitive with your colleagues. Instead, you should just be positive, keep a good work-life balance, and take a helpful attitude to your team. Find ways to add value and contribute to the positive atmosphere, whilst showing that you are capable at doing whatever work they give you, and you will thrive.
