Planning - Summer Scheme Review

I assisted the team on two projects. The first of which was a planning decision that had gone to appeal. For this project, I helped to curate the evidence for the KC and provided background research so colleagues could acquaint themselves with the wider context. The second project involved preparing planning statements and identifying policy contexts for a client seeking to develop co-living units in London.

The skills I improved through this internship are communication and attention to detail. I regularly had to research, compile and identify relevant information for colleagues. This required me to sift through large amounts of text and pull out information that was useful. I then had to convey this in a succinct and timely manner to colleagues so that they could understand and use it.

This placement has greatly improved my commercial awareness. Prior to this, I had little knowledge of the range of different services a developer would require. For example, heritage, townscape and environmental consultants or planning barristers are some of the roles I was unaware of before. Working in a professional environment that requires a commercial awareness has made me both a more productive and professional worker.

The company culture was a good mix of professionalism and approachability. Everyone that I worked with was clearly working to the best of their ability, something I greatly appreciate as it encouraged me to ask questions, take on new responsibilities and feel confident in taking initiatives. At the same time, everyone was friendly and approachable. I always felt supported and felt comfortable asking questions to others, no matter their seniority.

I enjoyed the insight greatly. The work was engaging and interesting. I always felt that I was contributing something meaningful to the team, rather than picking up random tasks for the sake of it. Most importantly, the team are pleasant and very friendly. I looked forward to coming into the office in the morning as I enjoyed talking and collaborating with other team members.

I would advise others to state clearly that they value taking on new responsibilities and feel confident taking initiatives. This is something I enjoy and was encouraged of me by other team members. I would say to others that if this is not something you are ready for, then perhaps Savills is not the environment for you.
