    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As an intern in the Wimborne Office I have been carrying out several valuation reports for many different sites such as country houses, cottages, council buildings such as a recycling centre and school and new flat developments. This includes filling out the report of the site I am working such as description, market commentary, development proposal, photos from the inspection as well as finding comparables in order to come to a valuation conclusion.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Learnt how to transfer my studies into real life situations and reports. Learnt how to work well in an office environment which is very different to University life and previous jobs I have had - this has improved my ability to focus and the importance of organising my time. Listening skills - have further understood the importance of listening carefully as well as to always ask questions no matter what they are. Working with various age groups as well as people quite senior

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, although I do Real Estate at University I still have a lot more to learn therefore when I first got given a report to do by myself I felt that was quite daunting and I didn't want to get it wrong. However I learnt that it doesn't matter if i get it wrong it is just important to learn from mistakes and give things a go as there will then be the support to show me what i could've done differently.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I knew to ask if I needed any more work or if I was struggling with something which helped. When I did the team around me were very friendly and willing to answer any questions I had. I also had 2 slots of time over the month which I made the most of to ensure I asked Phil, my director any questions I would like answering. This gave me more of an insight into how he feels within the company and his views on certain things from his perspective which also has taught me a lot and he has given me a lot of good advice to take away.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very friendly, willing to answer any questions. Non judgmental. smiley and could tell it was a nerve-wracking experience so very supportive small close knit section of the office - get on with each other well Phil clearly knows what kind of people fit well into the company environment so is very aware that some people may not be right for his team and the company and I think that attention to detail is important from a Director and head of team as it shows they care.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I found that it was a good way to spend my 4 weeks as it has given me skills that I will be apply to apply further into my career. It will also help me massively as I go back to University in September. The work had a lot of variety which meant I didn't get bored and I had a range of things to do and learn about.

  • 7. Would you recommend Savills to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Savills
  • Make sure to be humble and just be yourself. It's okay to not know everything just make sure you show you are willing to learn and to be a friendly team member. Think of things that makes you stand out and show you have broad interests in things - talk about something you are passionate about or enjoy doing that may be niche to others. Ask questions whenever you have the opportunity to speak to a member of the team (maybe during the interview process) as it shows you are interested in them and learning more about the company and that you are open to learn and listen to others.
