    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role involved managing retail sites, specifically shopping centres. This involved chasing rent, turnover rent and service charge for tenants at Merry Hill and Heathway Mall, administering LBA's for outstanding service charge arrears. I answered tenant queries and used workflow often for new leases, change and recharge purposes. I updated budgets for a retail park and Heathway Mall. Data handling was a key role, particularly in account reconciliation totalling £1.5m.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed a lot of existing skills, particularly time management and organisation within task prioritisation. Communication is another key skill I have further developed, especially in email writing as this was not something I had much prior experience with. I have also learnt a lot of new skills, such as lease reading and data management with Workflow, Compass, Credit Control and MRI.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship. I was asked to communicate directly with tenants, raising turnover rent and chasing service charge and raise these correctly. I was also asked to draft new leases on Workflow for tenants, which was essential that I ensured all the details were correct. I was also given responsibility with Budget+, entering and apportioning service charge budgets for Heathway Mall, which again was crucial that it was correct.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my internship, particularly from my mentor and the other Grads in my team, as well as the Associate Directors. They answered any questions that I had and really helped me understand Property Management as a whole. As a non-cog, I was worried that I would really be out of my depth but basically the whole team supported me throughout my month.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture and general atmosphere was even better than I imagined - from work socials, to intern socials to Barry's bootcamp with some members of my team. It reflects exactly the culture of a company that I would love to work for. It has encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone a lot more, which is a key thing that I will take away from the month.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I had a great month! I have really enjoyed my internship - it has gone by so fast! The people here are so welcoming and always nice to be around. It has definitely made me excited for the corporate world after travelling, and so hopefully I can start my career at Savills.
