Performance and Talent Intern Review

My role would involve lots of collaboration with the team I was placed within - working on a variety of projects that were meant to help boost performance and unlock talent in the company. I would spend some time working on building webpages, newsletters, other networking pieces as well as time supporting others in my team with their initiatives to build up talent in the company.

I have majorly developed my digital skills having to use a range of the microsoft suite and taking time to learn how to make my comms pieces look professional and fit the stakeholders' requirements. I have learnt to manage my time, communicate in an adaptable manner as different people expect different things. We gave presentations so I was able to develop confidence and learn new skills on best practices in those.

I was honestly surprised by the amount of responsibility I was given. I constantly had things to be doing both supporting others and leading my own projects such as creating the webpage, creating newsletters that reflected my team and having the opportunity to come up with my own project that stemmed from an area of interest. I would frequently meet with my manager but ultimately had lots of freedom to be responsible for my tasks.

Constant. I met with my line manager every single morning just to check in and see if there was anything I needed support with. Centrica also ensured we had a GTM who checked in frequently. I had a buddy as well who was amazing in terms of personal support. The early careers team were also constantly on hand. My team were amazing and were so willing to help me and answer any questions I had.

The company culture is one of a kind. I have been fortunate enough to meet people all across the business - from the CEO to security, colleagues in the post room, contact centre colleagues and so much more everyone is amazing. They are all patient and willing to listen/answer questions.

If I could do it all again I would. I have met the most amazing people and made friends for life. What I have learnt will be a huge influence on my career and it has allowed me to feel sure in where I want to go next. I have developed skills and encountered challenges I would not have anywhere else and found myself happy to wake up in the morning to start my day of work!

Don't listen to too much of what the media says about British Gas and Centrica - the energy industry has lots of misconceptions so definitely do your own research to understand what you need to know. Take every opportunity you can because they all end up so interesting and fun. Be courageous and creative because you will be noticed that way. Network and make friends!
