Industrial Placement Audit and Assurance Review

My role would constantly change on a day-to-day business. Usually it would start with a meeting in the morning updating the team on the progress and allocating tasks for the day/week. I could be looking at testing the accounts of a business or doing the planning work which involves researching the company and gaining an understanding of the business. Commonly I would be in office or on-site with client however flexible working is allowed.

I have learnt and developed many skills during my year here at Deloitte. I have developed many soft skills such as; effective communication, teamwork, presentational skills. Some of the new skills I learnt are audit specific. This involves being able to have a reasonable understanding of the different stages within an audit and how the work is performed. Therefore I now know a lot more of what the process is, in order for a company to get their accounts signed by auditors. I have also developed my time-management skills which is crucial when working in a corporate job and trying to balance many things.

I felt I was given a lot of responsibility straight away during my placement at Deloitte. This involved me being expected to complete certain parts of the audit then submitting my work for review. Therefore sometimes working on testing areas which included big balances by myself and if I ever needed to go to a senior for a question they would be more then happy to answer. Furthermore, during my latter stages of my placement I was given whole sub phases of the file to do in terms of planning. I never thought I would contribute to verifying such important numbers In a companies financial statement.

I received alot of support during my placement. For the first few weeks of my placement we were given a lot of training which would help us perform the work in audit we needed to. Throughout my year in audit, all my colleagues were really helpful and would be polite and friendly even if they did not know who I was. When working on different engagements, my seniors would be really helpful answering any questions I had no matter how [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] they were.

The company culture and general atmosphere was one of the best things about the job. The company culture was really inclusive and made everyone feel as if they were part of the wider organisation and feel valued. Furthermore everyone was really friendly and would engage in conversation. There were plenty of audit socials during the year as well as specific engagement socials you would have. This helped get to know my colleagues better. Furthermore everyone was really supportive which I think was very important when starting a new job.

I really enjoyed my placement year at Deloitte. It surpassed my expectations. I feel like I gained an invaluable amount of knowledge in audit which I would not have gained if I had not done my placement and not done it with Deloitte. I felt the colleagues at Deloitte were very like minded and all striving to help everyone to reach their potential. At times there were moments which it was hard due to workload and time-pressures but everyone supported you to cope with these and if you were struggling they would offer help.

I would encourage anyone who wanted to work in finance and Audit to apply. I would say make sure you CV is presented well, and do plenty of practice of the skill and reaosning tests which most companies require you to do. Furthermore I would practice your interview skills many times, as once you able to treat it almost like a conversation that will be your best interview and allow the interviewer to see what you will add/be like in their business and day-to-day
