Spring into Tax Review

The work experience in the area of tax took place over 2 days in the month of April 2023. After starting off with an ice breaker, we jumped straight into learning about the different business areas in the tax department. Partners came in and spoke to us. We got to interview employees. There was also a networking dinner where the employees moved around the tables, so we got to speak to many professionals. The insight ended with a case study, where we had to present our findings and opinion. I had good fun!

I learnt about the growth mindset which I think is a very important asset to have in order to succeed in life. I also got to know what sorts of skills are required to work in tax. Such as communication, being good with numbers, and working in teams. I learnt a bit about how to analyse data and numbers and how to use my conclusions to form a recommendation, this is a useful skill in this day and age.

Super interesting! I knew nothing about tax before I started this work experience so these 2 days were full of new information. It made me actually consider going into tax for my professional career. It really helped that the people teaching us actually worked at the firm and have had hands on experience in the role. It was good to get to know a bit more about Deloitte as a company too, and how they operate as well as their values and goals.

I really enjoyed the work culture and atmosphere at Deloitte. It was super friendly and warm and welcoming. I felt that if I ended yo working there I would be so comfortable that I wouldn’t want to leave. I understood that people got the work done when required to do so, at a good standard. There was a good balance of being chilled and laid back mixed with being serious and working hard, almost perfect.

Aside from what actually went on, I appreciated being well treated in terms of them setting up food and accommodation for one night. It just made the 2 days even better. There were plenty of breaks, too! The insight had a collaborative environment where I got to network with students of a similar calibre and different backgrounds to myself. I still speak to some of them today. It was overall very enjoyable and would recommend.

Yes

It would be nicer if the insights were run by people who actually work in the field. This one was run by external people. Don’t get me wrong they did a great job but it would just be that little bit better if it was run by employees in the tax field. They would be able to provide more insight and experience which would benefit the students that have come to learn about tax.
