    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • On a day to day basis, I meet with my project mentors who assign me work. This includes working on tidying up PowerPoints, taking meeting minutes, creating dashboards, participating in workshops. Outside of the project, we are encouraged to network and have coffee chats with more senior people in the firm who might work in areas we are curious about. There are often sessions that provide a deeper insight into the culture at Deloitte e.g. Partner talks and lunch and learns.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, over my time here, I have definitely grown and developed my skillset. I have developed my PowerPoint skills, sharpened my communication skills and improved my networking abilities. I have also practiced taking initiative and problem solving when faced with unforeseen issues. Agility is another skill that I have found is key to adding value to a project - being able to quickly adapt and not get caught up in changes is really important so projects can keep moving forward.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I would say so. I had to take meeting minutes for the daily workshop. When given tasks, there was not much 'hand holding' - the task was explained and I asked for clarification if I needed it then I was left to get the work done. Following that, feedback was given and I was expected to make the relevant changes to the piece of work before it was reviewed once again. Although there was a high level of autonomy, I felt that there was lots of support from my project mentors, so long as I asked for it.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had multiple points of contact- my buddy, project mentor, project manager as well as my people leader and the scheme reps. My buddy was a candid source of advice. I would have daily check ins with my project team who would assign me work and review it with me too. As for my people leader, we would meet on a weekly basis to touch base on how I was progressing towards my objectives that we had agreed on together. The scheme reps were there to help us out with any issues we faced. Overall, I feel like there was sufficient support available.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I would say that the company culture and general atmosphere was very positive and friendly. Everyone was really keen for you to learn and develop and tried their best to get you work that you wanted to do. The interns were all super nice and easy to get along with- it was not clique-y at all. In fact, we would sit together to do our work and go to lunch together as well as making plans outside of the office.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I very enjoyed my placement. I was a little bit worried about having to work extra hours but that has not been the case at all. We are encouraged to keep our times strict and we even get told off if we check our emails outside of office hours. It's a great environment to be in and I think there are so many opportunities to grow and develop your skill set while you're here. e.g. wide access to lots of different online courses and 101s, we interns even joined a hackathon and won!

  • 7. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
  • I would say to be authentic. Being candid goes really far- people can tell when you're faking something and it is so much easier to build relationships with people when you are just being yourself. I think the culture lends itself to being quite accepting of everyone so it does feel easy to be authentic at Deloitte. Come in with an open and enthusiastic mind alongside a hunger to learn and you will fit right in!
