Overview
I work in small teams on client projects developing software to fit their needs. I have worked on two main projects involving C, Java, and Javascript. The work involves daily meetings within the team, semi-regular meetings with the client, and has mainly been research and development focussed.
Skills
Learnt version control (bitbucket, git) and new languages (java and javascript). Developed my C skills. Learnt software architecture and kernel driver design.
Responsibilities
Had responsibility on first project as a primary developer of the code and was given the most to do on the project. In the second project have taken on a more secondary role to learn and develop more. Have also been able to do individual training and learn about less conventional areas - e.g. writing a client proposal.
Support & Guidance
Received support through line management and through wider company processes to provide employee support/welfare. Also attended training and also development sessions with graduates who onboarded.
Culture
Culture was quite relaxed with a good atmosphere when it came to hours - not too stressful or too much pressure - I was told I could let someone know if the work was beyond my capability. Regular work drinks and also semi-regular work socials.
Your Impressions
Enjoyed my placement a lot. Meaningful work with good people, living in a nice city. Has been useful for career and academic development.
Yes
Research them thoroughly and make sure you understand about high-integrity software development - why is it different from other types of software engineering - what additional skills are valuable for high-integrity and why do you want to work in this part of the field.
