    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My placement starts at 9am so I am normally in the office ten minutes before that. I log on to the system and check my emails. Normally I will have work to get on with, which ranges from helping more senior members of staff with tasks. These range from doing appraisals to helping map site locations. Sometimes there will be site visits to go on, however, this is project dependent. During my month I went on several visits to different sites across the region. In which I got to interact with potential clients and a range of contractors.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I would say that I have learned a number of new skills whilst at Savills. Most notably corporate communication, by that I mean how I communicate with people internally within the office but also externally to clients and contractors. I have also been given the chance to practice different skills that are more job specific for example running my own appraisal of a site, which is especially unique, as I have come into the industry through a Non-cognate route and thus all the job specific skills was relatively new to me.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Simply put yes. I came into work everyday and was given a different task to do, sometimes these tasks would take several days to complete. But there was an expectation to almost crack on with the work, which I liked. If you needed help or guidance it was readily available but you were strongly encouraged to give it a go. I have worked on a number of different projects that contributed to helping with the overall workload. One specific example I can think of was that I was tasked to research, record, map and then approach potential clients with regard to a strategic land project. I found this both interesting and rewarding and that the work was meaningful.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I think you get plenty of support and guidance in this program. Firstly it comes from the recruitment team who on accepting the offer for the internship were prompt with replies to any queries and questions I had. They also continued to be helpful throughout the placement, and I felt comfortable asking them questions etc. In my office everyone was very supportive in helping me with task. Whether it was as simple as an admin or computer problem, or a more complex question regarding the task that had been set. I felt everyone within the team was incredibly approachable and friendly and always willing to help. Also in terms of guidance not necessarily work related, the team were happy to answer any questions I had with regards to the wider industry and the work they do, which has been incredibly helpful.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I would say that the company culture is friendly and welcoming but also hardworking. By this I mean that everyone I talked to within the office was very kind and welcoming and keen to help you if necessary. Everyone around the office was also very polite, holding doors open for one another and saying good morning to everyone when they get in. I personally think this goes a long way in making people feel welcome. When it comes to work specifically I would say that the office and team I was in was hardworking and task orientated.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Savills for a number of reasons. Firstly I think this experience has very much helped me in deciding what I want to do in the future, which is a nice feeling to have. I have also had the opportunity to learn from and work with some great people across the different teams at the office I was in. I have also enjoyed the social aspect of the internship as well. One particular highlight was being able to attend the office summer party, which was very fun but also helpful, as I was able to talk to people in a more informal setting, which I think on the whole allowed me to settle into the team a lot better. Overall I have very much enjoyed my time at this company and would recommend this program to anyone who was keen to either learn more about the property industry or who wanted to work in the industry in the future.

  • 7. Would you recommend Savills to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Savills
  • I would say to anyone who is unsure about whether or not apply to just give it a go. I myself have really enjoyed my time here and I think that it would suit a lot of people. With regards to the interview I had to get this position, I would just say be yourself. People are more interested in what you have to say rather than if you can just regurgitate answers.
