    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Using various software in order to understand and investigate the ground and geology for engineering purposes. This may be to design the foundations for a building, underground structures like basements and tunnels, or understand energy storage methods such as CCS. This knowledge is then distilled into reports or figures to be presented to a client who would then decide what to with the information.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've developed many skills such as picking up lots of software, improving my coding skills and report writing skills. I have also generally improved on soft skills like networking, critical thinking and how to work effectively and efficiently.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During my placement, I have given various presentations on projects I have been part of and events I have attended outside of the company in order to disseminate the information to the rest of the team. I have also done more informal tasks in taking charge of a work experience secondary school student and showing them around what happens in my team day to day, as well as organising social events for the office.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I have always felt that if I needed help someone was always a phone call or a message away from either sorting the problem, or knowing someone who be able to help. There has also been a good environment of showing me how or why something is done this way rather so that I understand, rather than just telling me the answer which I feel like has helped with my learning a lot throughout.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is very friendly, social events for everyone are common and it is easy to get involved with a hobby or get into something new. The company also allows for flexible working and the trust that you get given has allowed me to do things I may not have been able to do if I had a strict 9-5 schedule every day.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have enjoyed my placement thoroughly, learning lots as well as exploring London and other places with a new set of friends I have found here. I wouldn't hesitate to come back if there was the right role for me to do here and would recommend anyone thinking about this industry to apply.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Arup
  • Read the key speech and know the basics of your discipline and you should be ok. Being able to answer questions confidently was at least helpful in being chosen for the role.
