    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Solving issues and correcting misalignments of environmental data to ensure data is of the highest accuracy in preparation for annual assurance at year-end. Also get involved with the development and implementation of the Group's general strategy which often includes benchmarking through market research or modelling of power consumption trends. Day-to-do involves relatively regular meetings but plenty of time to work on objectives independently. I'd say no day is the same.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • This placement has vastly improved my organisational skills (especially my ability to prioritise effectively), my Excel skills, my confidence speaking in front of senior leaders and how to best articulate complex subjects in an easier-to-understand way. This role also gives you a great understanding of how a company of 20,000+ employees operates as well as how the energy system in general is set out; directly transferrable to many other roles within or outside Centrica.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My manager and I were responsible for driving best practice in environmental performance reporting across 6 of the business units and I independently calculated the emissions of the seventh (oil and gas JV) to understand how their environmental impact would fit in with our historical emission profile. There are too many things to talk about but I would never have guessed how much responsibility I would have.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My manager and I spoke at least weekly but during busy times we worked closely together on key pieces of work so I had as much support as I needed. I also had grad buddies and the organisers of the year in industry scheme to talk to if I needed to talk through anything.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Centrica has a very relaxed culture and more and more people are coming into the office (Tuesday-Thursday are the busiest). However, I would prefer if more people came to the office, especially those on the grad scheme, just so it was more sociable. Windsor is much more relaxed than Park House (Oxford Street) in my opinion but that's good as you can mix it up - I worked across both.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • To a great extent. Learnt so much about what makes a good climate disclosure, climate risk to the energy sector as well as the different technologies in the pipeline that will likely decarbonise Centrica and help us hit the 2045 net zero goal. This is all something I was extremely interested in anyway therefore I couldn't not enjoy this year as I was surrounded by market leaders who taught me so much.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Centrica
  • Be interested in the energy sector and up-to-date on what's going on in this space. Display an ability to work effectively in teams but also how you show initiative when working independently.
