    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was an intern in the Financial Risk part of Risk Advisory. My role included a range of tasks, mostly research. For example, researching potential clients, researching regulations, looking into recent mergers and/or acquisitions of a specific company. Furthermore, I wrote a blog summarising and analysing a recent publication of regulations which was then sent round internally. I was also given interview practice where I prepared a presentation and was asked questions on that topic.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I have definitely learnt new skills as well as developing existing skills. For example, I developed my research skills and whenever I submitted my work, I was given honest feedback on what I could do to improve. Additionally, I developed networking skills as we were actively encouraged to meet people of all levels in order to learn more about the work we do and the company. And finally, I improved my interview and presentation skills in the practice interview that was organised for me. There were also many opportunities to sign up to extra training to further enhance workplace skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes I was but I think due to the fact that the internship was only four weeks it was difficult for my managers to give me work that would last a long time (which is generally the more important work). Nonetheless, I felt that I was trusted with my work and although I received advice and was able to ask questions, I felt that I was fully responsible for my work and able to make my own decisions about what I produced and how.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The support and guidance actually exceeded my expectations. I was nervous joining a big firm but everyone was very approachable, especially the less senior employees. I felt completely comfortable in messaging people with questions and asking them for help. Furthermore, i met multiple people of different levels of seniority for coffees and lunch and felt that all of them gave me good guidance and support and made me feel welcome in the firm. We were given buddies before we joined which was helpful for when we had any questions about the joining process or anything during our internship.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The firm has a collegiate atmosphere which is on the whole very friendly and an enjoyable place to work. Interns are encouraged to get involved but not to over work and my managers would often tell me not to work late and to enjoy my evenings. People were very welcoming and helpful, and would often go for coffee or lunch to help me understand and learn more about the firm, the team I was in or just to have a chat. I really enjoyed the atmosphere.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed it on the whole. I found the work I was doing interesting and different and I was able to explore a variety of different areas within the sector I was in. The people were friendly and approachable which helped a lot. I also made good friends with the other interns. The only thing I would say is that there was only one in person social and that was on the penultimate day so it would be even better if we could have all met in person at an earlier date.

  • 7. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
  • Make sure you practice speaking to a camera before completing the video interview because those are completely different to anything anyone is likely to have done before and can take some getting used to. If you interview online or in person, make sure to prepare answers to traditional questions such as why Deloitte or why this internship role and practice this with a parent, family member or friend, as well as making sure to read the news in the run up to the interview and make sure you have topics you are passionate about within the company, such as their charity initiatives, or the work you may do.
