    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • On several occasions I have been given responsibility over crucial parts of pitchbooks requested by the client. I was placed in charge of rigorously researching and designing these pages to a high standard, and was able to attend client calls during which these played an important role. Moreover, I have conducted important 'know you client' due diligence as part of the deal process. Furthermore, I have been involved in several important communications and meetings with seniors, giving me opportunities to engage with highly experienced business leaders.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • During the internship you receive a buddy and line manager, both of which are available for general, and team-specific support and guidance. As part of the first week we also receive formal training which is highly interactive, enabling you to hit the ground running. Team specific training however is more self-directed, and initiative must be taken in order to make the most of this. Likewise, be proactive in engaging with work and trying to understand it, because it may not always be fully explained. Nevertheless, colleagues were always available to answer questions and made time for me.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very supportive and inclusive culture from day one to departure. People are friendly and welcoming to those from all backgrounds. We have had several talks during the internship which emphasized the importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the important reasons behind this. The general atmosphere was positive, with no overbearing face time culture. Nevertheless, in such a big organization it is important to ensure that your voice is heard if you have any issues.

The work itself was engaging and varied, giving me fantastic exposure to the sector. Whilst hours could drag on occasion, this was not overly frequent and the learning process remained rewarding.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to UBS
  • Make sure you understand the business and the bank. Understand what your division of choice does, why you want to join, and how you can add value. Similarly, research the culture of the bank and how it stands out from its competitors. For day 1, try to familiarize yourself with the companies that you may be working with and understand what is going on at a macroeconomic level in the market so you can apply this.
