Overview
Taking care of costs in the subcontract packages which are dedicated to me and reporting them internally and updating the VCR. I have also been forming and submitting client variations upstream using CEMAR. After 10 months of managing my own subcontractors, I have now started a pre construction quantity surveying role which requires me to measure and organise subcontractor works. The aim of the job off and on site is to make money!
Skills
Yes, University has not taught me anywhere near as much as this year. I have learnt the whole process from Pre-Construction, to managing subcontractors costs and learning how to deal with the client side of QSing. A variety of skills University would struggle to teach without on-site experience.
Responsibilities
Thankfully, my boss [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was extremely good to me. Apart from being a really good guy, he has given me a lot of responsibility which I have enjoyed. He has let me completely run subcontractor packages, run my own CE's which held high value and also allowed me to focus on the groundworks package which I really enjoyed. He has also allowed me to price up multiple projects.
Support & Guidance
A lot. I was fortunate enough to be on a project where I got on extremely well with everyone. I never felt scared to ask questions as everyone was super friendly and extremely knowledgable.
Culture
Really good I think. It's a company from observation- what you put in is what you get out. If you come to work looking to work hard, ask questions and have a laugh along the way you'll love it at Kier.
Your Impressions
Loved it. I would gladly stay on doing how I have been doing.
Yes
Advice I would give : Try and gain as much construction experience as possible, it doesn't necessarily have to be Quantity Surveying this is always useful and will be a massive help once you are on site.
