    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I would complete both the day to day elements of the role and project work. I received supervision from my managers to ensure I was confident in my ability to complete tasks and connected with stakeholders across the business. I was given ownership over specific projects and the ability to make judgement decisions for these projects. I networked extensively with colleagues across the business, including out of my division. Colleagues were always generous with their time.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I developed my understanding of markets and the financial services industry. I also gained familiarity with specific software used by my team and within UBS, as well as improving my abilities with Microsoft Office software. I improved my communication skills by collaborating with colleagues across the business and remained agile in response to new developments. I also enhanced my multi-tasking ability and organizational skills as I often had numerous different tasks to manage simultaneously. I am confident these skills will benefit me going forward.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • The work that I was given was essential for the business and if I had not been completing it would have been completed by colleagues within our team. I was proud to be contributing to important work which was making an impact. The tasks which I worked on were fairly varied which gave me a good overview of the different elements of the role. Occasionally, I found the tasks I was completing to be repetitive.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received fairly extensive support from my team and my manager. If I had an issue then I felt there would always be someone available to support me with this. Colleagues across the business were warm and welcoming and made me feel included and that I could reach out from them and receive support. At some points in the internship, I was working with new software which no one in my team had much experience with - this meant getting support was more difficult.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was warm and inclusive. Colleagues remained calm in the work place and would not be hostile to each other. I felt that the team was committed to making me feel welcome and were always willing to connect me with other colleagues. My opinions as someone new to the team were encouraged. Occasionally, I felt that there was a 'face time' culture in the firm where colleagues felt obliged to be seen to be working at certain times.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my internship as I enjoyed connecting with my team and gaining an insight into the industry. I feel I developed my knowledge of the sector to a large extent and became more confident at presenting and asking questions. I enjoyed working in London on a daily basis and found the office environment to be very pleasant. The negatives for me was that sometimes I felt isolated with team members on holiday or working from home and that tasks could be repetitive.

  • 7. Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to UBS
  • To prepare for the situational judgement test because it is important that you understand the culture of the firm. I would also recommend preparing extensively for video interviews as you will be required to be nimble and responded with long answers and little preparation time. I would recommend you try to develop your understanding of the financial services industry as broadly as possible as you can never fully predict what might occur during the interview.
