    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Arrive at office. Speak to manager, get tasks for the day. This includes working on some software to edit schematics, write a report, working in excel, contributing to real life projects. Have a few meetings throughout the day. Go home.

  • Learnt how to use new software often used in this department including Revit, Pro-design, Bluebeam. Have developed my Excel skills.

  • Yes, working in documents that are sent out to clients. Given a lot of trust to do it correctly.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Received a lot of support. Had a very good line manager who checked up on me. The person I reported to most was the head of the team I was working within who was very good at supporting me through the task. He would explain basics and reasons as to why we are doing the task which was helpful. Never had a problem asking for help. Team environment, everyone was helpful and contributed.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very nice atmosphere. Would all eat lunch together. After work drinks were common which was nice to bond with team members and to meet members not in the same team. Very flexible with working week. Social trips across offices.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. The work was enjoyable as I gained experience working in an office within a multidisciplinary team on real life projects. The company was very relaxed and flexible making it more enjoyable to go to work.

  • Arup has a big focus on sustainability in the office so show a passion for this. The company are very accommodating so I don't think any preparation is required as it is all explained to you.
