    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked alongside the team doing tickets for the verification products. Coding was mainly in python. I also did some writing of scripts relating to weather verification. I worked a little bit with FORTRAN and Perl

  • Developed programming skills, and learned new programming languages such as Perl. I was also able to improve my communication and team working skills. Gained experience doing paired programming

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a good deal of responsibility. I worked on products which were directly used by members in verification and other teams. I also introduced substantial and new features to the products.

  • I was given training and supported throughout the placement. I was encouraged to take on opportunities which came up during the placement which helped develop my soft skills

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The organization was fairly large and I didn't get too many chances to interact with or work with people from other departments but covid did impact my placement a bit.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I did enjoy the placment, and felt I got a great deal of benefits to my personal growth throughout the year. I wish I had a better chance to meet more people within the company but, I was working from home for the majority of the placement with only 4 months working in the building.

  • Prepare for the interview well. If you do get the job take your opportunity to network and join the different groups within the met office. If you are looking for a computer science-related placement, make sure to ask the department what you are doing to make sure that the placement is what you are looking for.
