  • Lots of skills to learn due to the variety and range of tasks, also given the chance to develop your academic ability through training courses and seminars! Great chance to improve both your soft and hard skills e.g. Confidence, critical thinking, problem solving, design and creativity, market research, analytics and data science

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. You will be expected to manage your own time and workload, and mostly work independently. However there is a lot of support by the wider team, so you can always ask for help with anything.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Lots of support and guidance - the team are super friendly and always willing to help. I was encouraged by everyone to develop my skill set as much as possible, and always felt comfortable with asking for help whether that be asking for specific help with a task or discussing possible career paths.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Its a pretty close team, and everyone is very friendly - a very relaxed atmosphere. Most people have been here for a while so everyone knows each other very well.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement - it gave me a chance to massively grow my CV. I have done countless shadowing days with other teams throughout the Met office, along with lots of training courses and science seminars. I have also been given excellent networking opportunities! I would mention that the placement is by yourself in the team, so you do have to go out of your way to find other placement students / social opportunities.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Met Office
  • Go for it! As a undergrad they are really encouraging of development, and its a great way to find out what else there is in the MO. If you do get a placement be sure to take as many opportunities as you can, and expand your networking as much as possible! There is so many chances to grow, just be proactive and go beyond just your team!
