    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Working as part of a small group of people developing systems to add functionality available for other projects. Control over design and the build flow of the Linux operating system images for projects.

  • My understanding of how computers work at a low level has been much improved along with how different architectures function. From debugging the kernel and tracing more elusive issues, my methodology for bug fixing has improved and sped up.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was not working on any projects actively in production or dealing directly with customers. However, I was working as the sole developer on most of my systems and given the freedom to choose how things were done. When I had a project to do I was responsible for the entire system

  • Anyone on my team was happy to help with any problems I had, once I had asked for help them it was no problem getting support when it was needed. I never felt isolated and without support.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere was always pleasant and the people were very accommodating. Lunch breaks are nice and there is always someone for a quick chat.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The work was always interesting and there was something to be getting on with at all times. I enjoyed being able to try my hand in the area as I hadn't spent a lot of time with embedded systems which I meant I picked up skills in a whole new area of the subject.

  • Being personable and relaxed in the interview is just as important as technical skills and it is much easier to get your point across when you calm. For technical questions, saying you don't know and then having an educated guess is always a worthwhile approach.
