    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I have been involved in the management of prime central London offices and mixed-use development sites. Supporting Directors to provide an optimal management service to tenants and clients alike. Day to day responsibilities include dealing with tenant queries, running checks on financial accounts and recharges, reviewing leases to set up new properties/portfolios on the company portal and attending client meetings to update AMs on the the success of their assets and any subsequent concerns.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • - Industry Knowledge: developed industry specific knowledge and skills ie. understand key terminology (service charge, leases, wayleaves etc) to support a possible future career in property. - Time Management/Organisation: reporting into multiple directors on various portfolios required me to prioritise work, manage my capacity carefully and concentrate on each tasks in hand. - Communication: liaising with an array of different people in the industry, knowing when I need to ask for assistance, being confident in my capabilities.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • As I developed my industry specific and self confidence over the course of year, I have in turn been given more responsibility. While the nature of the high-end projects I have been working on has limited the degree of responsibility an employee at my level can have, where possible I have certainly taken and been given the opportunity to lead on important projects, liaise with clients/tenants independently and take ownership of tasks when others are limited in their working capacity.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My support and guidance over the last year has been excellent. Following the sudden departure of my original line manager, there was a period of time where the frequency of this guidance subsided a little. However, I received continued constructive support from others in the team before being assigned a new line manager who has since has provided me with valuable advice and direction (particularly in relation to how can prepare and use my placement year to support a progressive career in the industry).

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • - Supportive: the company actively encourages a healthy work/life balance, recognising the value of progression and success within the workplace as well as satisfaction and fulfilment in life outside of the office. - Positive: employees are friendly, approachable, supportive of each other, creating a positive atmosphere and caring attitude towards colleagues, to clients and to the work we are doing. - Diverse: hugely successful in encouraging a diverse workplace. Realisation that more can be done to increase this diversity is a huge testament to the company's culture.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at Savills, and feel very grateful to have been given the opportunity to work alongside many leading specialists within the property industry. The work has opened my eyes up to a career that I am now very interested in exploring further. Aside from this, the year's placement has also provided me with a set of hugely valuable skills and an inspiring network of people that/who I will find huge support from over the course of my final year at university and beyond.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Savills
  • 1. Ask questions - ask questions when you are confused or really don’t know the answer and ask questions to learn more and improve. 2. Take note - take note of what you learn, of tasks you are set and of meetings/events planned. Note all that you need to stay on track, this will help with organisation. 3. Be confident - be confident in your capabilities, your ideas and the whole learning process. Confidence will come with time, try and enjoy the journey to get there.
