    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The day-to-day within the role involves frequent meetings/discussions with colleagues/clients to discuss ongoing projects and challenges we may be facing. Multiple projects can present themselves at once, providing the opportunity to have a consistent flow of new work to complete. Arup allows you to work from home but encourages an office environment, supported by great offices and staff.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have improved many skills that I had in university, particularly office skills, such as Microsoft programs. Arup Moodle also encourages you to continue learning new skills whilst working, such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam and many more editing tools. Outside of office skills, my technical knowledge of the water industry has improved as the year has passed, due to seeing different challenges and discussing with colleagues.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Rarely was I given sole responsibility for a given task. On some occasions I was trusted to take on an important task that was new to me. However, quite often I was given smaller tasks with t]less responsibility for a job I was not very aware of.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support during my year placement, but not as much guidance. When I met an obstacle, I'd rarely find myself without anyone willing to help me, but when set task, I would often be expected to know where to go and what to do, especially for someone of little experience.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere and culture at Arup is better than I imagined. Social events, opportunities and sporting teams are constantly provided and promoted, encouraging everyone to participate. I can't imagine a better environment to join post-university.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I began my placement with not much of an idea as to how it was going to go. I feel that in the early days of my placement, I felt quite underwhelmed, as work in general was not very fast and there was a lot of time between tasks. However, as time went on, I found work became more enjoyable, and I've found that to be the case up until my last day.

  • 7. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Arup
  • I would advise others to thoroughly research the role and sector they're applying for. Don't apply because of the name and end up in a role you don't enjoy. If you want to work at Arup, wait until there is a role suited to you, and then go for it.
