    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assisting in structural engineering building projects. This involved completing structural analysis and design calculations, producing drawings, analysis models, calculating embodied carbon etc.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've improved my 'engineering thought', meaning I have a better idea of what looks right and wrong. I've also greatly improved my drawing skills, and have a much better appreciation for the business side of engineering.

  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Given the huge size of the office, it's impossible to meet everyone. Also, given that COVID measures were still in play when I started, it took months for me to properly make friends and see people. I respect Arup's care regarding COVID, but I know that my course mates completing similar internships at other companies had far more social outings and a more family-like atmosphere in the office.

  • 7. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Arup
  • Be honest in your application, and don't be too worried that you won't know things. In my interview, I felt that I was being questioned as much on my character and values as I was on my engineering understanding. Regardless of how much you know from uni, you'll end up learning 99% of what you need to know on the job, and the hiring team recognise that.
