    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I have to resource projects that are of a cyber security nature ensuring that these requests are completed in a fast and precise manner as our customers are at risk. This means that every morning I have a triage meeting with my team so that we can talk about our work and anything new that has come in. I also have to have calls with managers of all the timezones.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt technical skills and knowledge that I never thought I could as I am such a non-technical person. However, taking advantage of the free Microsoft exams has definitely helped with that! I have also developed my change management skills through another free course provided by Microsoft. Along with these I have also developed my team working, communication and business skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given lots of responsibility during this placement which I didn't think I would be given coming into it. Working in an environment that is so vital for our customers and where we have to act so fast I feel that I have been given the highest level of responsibility that I could have been given and have enjoyed working with me team so much

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Right from the outset of the internship I was given a buddy who had done my role before so the help that he gave me was so important. This along with the 4 week onboarding experience really meant that I was supported as much as needed. Throughout the internship I had bi-weekly 1-1's with my manager where we could talk about anything that's needed and the recruitment team also made themselves available.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture at Microsoft is second to none. They have supported everyone so well throughout the pandemic which has been such a hard time for many. Whether it be access to equipment to work from home, the extra days holiday, or just the availability of people to speak to. Everyone is happy to help you no matter who they are!

  • I have enjoyed my placement to the fullest extent. Being part of a great community in a company like Microsoft really gave me a insight into what working for a company would be like and has pushed my to apply for graduate roles within the business.

  • 7. Would you recommend Microsoft to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Microsoft
  • I would say for the students to just be themselves, Microsoft are more interested in who you actually are rather than who you think they want you to be. I would also urge people to apply even if they aren't technical as there are still business roles available and they shouldn't be worried about working for a tech company.
