    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • On the surface, a great place to work with great values and great leaders, helping to deliver a convincing nice place to work. 4 stars for the progressive attitude of the company. Although the rest of the company was great, my experience in my role however was not so delightful. With only 4 months in, i started to feel unwanted and felt alienated against. Some members of the team were rude and aggressive to me directly and some members were passive and none-caring.There were a few nice people in the team that made the placement bearable. 0 stars.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like my colleagues wanted me gone. I felt alienated against and felt like people would talk behind my back. When i arrived at my placement, i was told to believe that my colleagues were to train me up on the job, or point me in the direction where i can learn the job. What i received was "we'll teach you when the opportunity comes, or when its required". "Difficult" things, were not for me it seemed, i was never opened up to them, even when i'd gently asked to be taught it on numerous occasions. I should add that they were never expressed as difficult, i was never added to, asked to help, or be a lead in anything of importance, unlike my previous interns or fellow apprentice.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was spread out between 2 job roles. Booking a 1 on 1 with my manager felt like my manager might have perceived me as a nuisance or chore and i didn't want to aggravate the situation. However, where i did manage to book a 1 on 1, i felt like my manager was honestly helpful and tried to resolve problems for me the best he could and i cannot fault that. However, my supervisor was very passive. rather than solve the problems i had, he brushed them under the carpet and reassured me nothing was wrong. Not very progressive for a progressive company if you ask me. He would passively teach basic things and never come back to them. towards the end of my internship i gained some help/guidance/support from a recent graduate working in the team that made it a little bearable.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy "supporting the team" however what that support was differed from day to day. Where i had free time, i used it to catch up on Emails, get backlogged work done, or try learning from members of the team. However, the more vocal members of the team saw this as me "not doing my job" and gave me "tasks" to do. Which i'd only find out later was only to waste my time. Considering the team could reach me via IM, i don't see why the more quiet members of the team did not speak up and ask for something that was genuine if they thought that i was not doing work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Relegated to basically given only 2 priorities of some mediocre responsibility were; cataloging inventory in case of an audit, and writing shipping memos so that packages could be shipped. Admin work essentially. the other responsibilities varied and there were almost never anything serious given to me. However, 5 stars because of a project i asked for, that my manager let me work on, in the second half of my internship. It wasn't crucial, but i appreciate the help that i got for it from both my manager and a newly started graduate.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Honestly, from the bottom of my heart i truly believe that the only thing i learned that i can take away is that I developed a tougher skin and learned to not be pushed around by my colleagues. I realized that friends cannot be made at work and that if you have a problem with anyone, it is better to go speak with HR or a manager as the respect i would lose from my colleagues for going to HR is not as important as my mental well being. I'm glad that i learned these things, however, i don't feel like this should have been the primary skill to develop for an internship at a company such as this.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Calm and relaxed. nether exciting or dull. chatter here and there, mostly quiet from office to office. Where i worked was calm with occasionally other teams stopping by to have a chat or come to us with a problem. Apart from feeling alienated from other encounters with my team, doing whatever task was assigned to be that day was the last piece of solace i could find aside from taking a break and playing ping pong here and there.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was told by my team members that the other interns were hired because the company needs them to hold the business afloat - whatever that means. So for them i guess that's well organised, structured and planned out so that the replacement interns the following year are able to pick up from where the others left off, but i was told that my role is just a good deed. That my role isn't important or crucial, that they do this to help people out who are applying for roles like this. I would later be told something similar but softened down by my manager. I can only assume that the poor planning, lack of structure and laissez faire approach to my internship was more of a "They shouldn't complain, they wouldn't be here if we didn't open up a rec'. They should be grateful". Thats how it came across anyway. 3 stars for my manager attempting to provide some structure to my internship midway-through when i address this with him.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Once every quarter, there would be a personal development style session with a manager the team would have to go through that would monitor each individuals personal development. Beyond what i experienced, as I've previously stated, this company is probably a nice place to work as they are very progressive and stand by very endearing values. this personal development scheme is just another good application of their philosophy as a company. my only request is that that there should be more development and education as to WHY the values of this company are important as i feel that most employees might find it "silly" and wont adhere to them.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would very much like to give this company another chance, however NOT in this team or working group. Others may be better suited for this team, but personally i came with the impression that i was here to learn and help out, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] I'm sure that this is only my experience and that the rest of the company is not like this, so based on that 50/50 chance of me being hired back here.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were many cliques and LOTS of gossip amongst the students. if that's your thing you'll have no problem. Every Thursday night, all the students would go out an drink until early hours of Friday morning. Some did not make it to work on Fridays. The social team bonding time among me and my colleagues were a little different. Since the group was a mixture of ages, the group liked to go to restaurants and eat well. i didn't enjoy the drinking, but i could appreciate the food we ate with my team.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • restaurants are relatively expensive from where i come from. housing is relatively the same, from where i come from. food shopping is relatively expensive from where i come from. alcohol is relatively cheaper than from where i come from. sports is relatively the same as from where i come from. public transport is cheaper than from where i come from. Decent healthcare is harder to find than from where i come from, and dont go to anywhere that isnt private.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • really bad. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] The town(s) are not well maintained, everything is on a hill, drinks are either cheap or expensive. cheap = bad drinks, expensive = not worth it. some reason students go out on a thursday, which never made sense to me. and on the weekend, the students would go back home to see their families, so there would not be a student weekend night.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • YES! This company has many many many volunteering activities to be a part of! lots of chances to be engaged with the public and help out sharing the companies brand and sharing your help and expertise. Like any town, there are things you can do, all of which i dont think you will want to in this town, as its just not a delightful place to be in. there is a reason all the students go back home on the weekend
