    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my 12 week internship at SNC-Lavalin Atkins this summer. I was thrown into the deep end, getting involved with real projects from day 1 and being given a lot of responsibility too. Everyone was also incredibly friendly and helpful making my time there really great.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was tasked with producing deliverables pretty much from the start, this made me feel valued by my colleagues. They were also very willing to take time out of their dat to explain things to me, and find tasks that matched my interests but still allowed me to learn new things. I felt like I was a part of the team, in a social and professional sense.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • On my first day I sat down and introduced to the company, my team and various projects. From then onwards, although I was working on tasks mostly on my own, I had plenty of support from project supervisors. My line manager was particularly good, making sure I was able to work on projects I found interesting and making sure I was set up for the future after the internship.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was pretty busy on a daily basis as I was attached to a project for all but 2 days during my internship. This meant managing my own time. However I was definitely not put under too much stress. There was always work to be done and by the end of the internship I was given a lot of responsibility over deliverables.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was surprised by how quickly I was allowed to work on deliverables. Within my first 2 days I had already created slides and content that went out to clients. In my final project I was responsible for an entire section of research, data analysis and the attached report. This was a lot more responsibility than I had expected to have during my placement, but I was supported all along the way.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The data analysis I begun exploring during my internship largely steered my final year module choices. A lot of the other training I received both in core consulting skills and data analysis will help me massively in my future career. I was offered a lot of guidance and support when considering the future from my line manager and team directors.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was a lovely place to work in. Everyone was very friendly and the facilities were great.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was a plan in place for what we should achieve in each week of the placement. At the end of the placement there was a celebratory lunch and an appraisal for each intern, where we shared what we had learnt and taken from the experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Atkins invested a lot in me by helping me with my core consulting skills, then letting me take sole responsibility for aspects of projects. I was given a lot of technical skills support particularly in Excel.

There was a celebratory project lunch at the end of a stage of a big project. We also went out for drinks on most Fridays after work.
