    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The overview of the role is great as it involves a variety of tasks dealing with station facilities, roads and highways etc. I get a real sense of engineering works in real life. Day-to-day basis involves detailed design of road facilities such as different type of crossing, cross-check of utilities of drawings in AutoCad, some housing development works, sometimes it also involves site inspection where I travel to site such as roundabout scheme to check the condition and progress.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt some engineering design and analysis skill which is a bit technical to the business, not necessarily something common you have learnt in your course but still applicable sometimes. I have also learnt some communication skill that is necessary for work in verbal and written language. It is useful to learn to convey your thoughts in a proper manner. I have also learnt some time management skills where I have to allocate the tasks to do on a day to day basis.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Responsibility is not as high compared to other full time worker as I was only there for a couple of weeks which is 9 weeks. The main idea is for me to learn the real work engineering application and get a real taste of working in projects and see if I am interested in it. However, I am still getting involved in meetings and I am able to share with ideas and also asked questions which can be useful.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A lot of support is given by my line manager and also my work buddy, who is responsible for my day today activity and help to deal with my queries. They have often arranged meetings with me to discuss about my work and offer help or advice if applicable. Other colleagues also offered some support as well to ensure I am given work responsibility when my line manager is away for holidays for two weeks.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture is great I think, as everyone is helpful and there is a great sense of teameork involved as well. The general atmosphere is not too tense nor relaxed and everyone would be happy to contribute in discussions and not feeling stressed/ pressured. I believe it has a lot of opportunity to provide self development of you are looking to enhance your career opportunities and get promoted to a higher position. I enjoyed working there.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed it a lot as there are a lot of opportunities for learning and development. I also have a great buddy and line manager who are kind and willing to help me with any queries no matter big or small, I am also given freedom to work from home if I like and was trusted to be responsible for my job. It is sad for me when it was the last day for the internship because I like it a lot.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Atkins
  • Be honest and sincere during the application and be yourself. Get some practise for the different test to get familiarise with the type of questions asked. And then during the final interview be relaxed and act as if you are talking to a friend in a relaxed manner and it will be alright. Do be involved in more extra cocurricular events as there are many situational judgement question so the events or role may help.
