    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the internship and the work assigned to me very much. Atkins is not just a company that you come to do work, but there are also activities around within and outside the working environment to look forward to. I felt the warm welcoming and learned a lot of useful skills.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My manager cared about me and my health and well-being. People I worked with listened to my decision towards the work I carried out and guided me when necessary. My manager understands my background and helped me improve the professional skills required. I was also invited to some important meetings.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The office management team were very helpful and tried there best to solve issues I arise. My supervisor was a busy man but still tried to spend time answering my questions when possible. Overall, I was happy with the management team, my supervisor and the level of support I got.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the time, there were not many of my colleagues on the project I was working on, so I was kept very busy on a daily basis and was a contacting point of the other disciplines as well as my manager. I occasionally worked over-time, although, it was not required but my manager.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I had been given great responsibility for the project I was working on. I required me to produce reports to be read by the client and, ultimately, a presentation to the client. I was also worked as a junction between my manager and other disciplines in order to try and resolve the work issues.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This placement very widens my knowledge within this industry and taught me how to act and do things professionally. It is exactly what I am interested in it and will be very useful for my long-career goals. I feel I am advantaged by having taken this placement compared to my fellow at the university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was warm welcoming and because there is no seat allocated to anyone I managed to sit next to the new people each day. The building was clean and the office atmosphere was quite relaxed. We often gather for treats by some of our colleagues and a general talk about things outside of the office.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My manager had planned out what he would like me to complete upon my arrival. However, I had a hard time trying to complete the task as not enough training was provided at the start. But after became familiar with the project and got support from my supervisor, I was able to do the task more confidentially.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt the project-specific training was lack at the time. However, the company funded me to study and complete the exam related to the work I was undertaken.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The organisation shows clearly that they would like to invite me on-broad.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • During my internship, there were also a few fellow students in the same position as me. We got along very well and sheared knowledge among ourselves. I had done a number of social event and activities with my colleagues outside of the office hours, although, they were funded by the company.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Working and living in central London was quite expensive. The price of food and drink around Victoria seemed to be unavoidable unless bringing in your own lunch. Despite it being an expensive area to live in, I managed to save up money by bringing my own lunch and cycle to work most days.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a number of pubs and bars within a walking distance from the office. Generally, they are a good atmosphere. The transport also made it very convenient to travel home safely even late at night. The cost, however, was quite high. Overall, the nightlife was really enjoyable and fun.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We often did sport after work and baked cake for the team.
