    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Deloitte. I engaged in a variety of tasks with colleagues who were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend the Birmingham office to any potential applicants, as everyone was extremely supportive and I was given plenty of tasks to engage with throughout my time there.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were extremely helpful and valued my assistance on all kinds of tasks. Particularly, when they were busy I would take on some of their workload and this was always highly appreciated. I was also offered tea and coffee rounds by colleagues sat near by and they were always keen for a friendly chat.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had regular check-ins during the internship and a final meeting/interview at the end to make sure I was getting the most that I could out of the scheme. Any questions were answered promptly and helpfully too, and I always felt like there was help available for the more challenging tasks.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I usually had plenty to do during my time at Deloitte, and starting work for someone frequently led to further tasks being assigned by them as the internship progressed. I did have some moments with less to do, and in these times I would do some miscellaneous research or learn some tax-specific terminology.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was trusted with a lot of impactful work during my internship, such as spreadsheets that would be used when talking with clients. This work often had strict deadlines, and I was even asked to a client meeting off-site where I got to see a more personable side to the job.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed significantly in terms of time management and organisational skills, as the internship was quite demanding. I also learned about some useful tools for Microsoft Excel which can be applied to my degree and became more confident due to interacting with a lot of different people on a daily basis.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere was really pleasant and colleagues were extremely helpful whenever I needed assistance. I was checked up on throughout my time there, felt valued and was offered coffee frequently throughout the day. I moved around the various departments often too and everyone was very welcoming in each area.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was structured very well with meetings at the start, middle and end. I was also encouraged to set objectives and collect feedback to verify that I had met these objectives, and presented this feedback at the end meeting/interview. Furthermore, I kept track of everything I did and learned in a notebook to help support this.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Deloitte was committed to ensuring that I learned transferable skills during my time at the company, and I always felt that my presence was valued. I was invited to various meetings and my progress was checked on frequently. Everyone always made sure I understood what was required before starting a task and training was thorough.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Travel loan

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am extremely excited to work at Deloitte in the future as there is great room for progression and they are very flexible with transferring offices/deferring for a master's course/etc. The company is very clearly structured with its accounting exams and levels, and I know exactly what is expected of me at each of these.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I worked with one other student in the department during the six weeks, and we had lunch together frequently. I also attended social events such as promotion drinks and went to pubs on Fridays with colleagues. Overall, I had a great time and felt welcome throughout my time spent here.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived outside of the city centre in Birmingham during my time there, so the cost of living was very affordable. The cost of socialising in Birmingham city centre is a bit more expensive, but still affordable when considering the internship wage. Therefore I would highly recommend this location as Birmingham city centre is really nice too.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I had a great time at the promotion drinks and when I went to pubs with colleagues, as Birmingham is a very lively city with a lot to do. I didn't go out clubbing, but my time in pubs and bars was very enjoyable as there isn't as much variety where I come from originally.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a lot going on outside of work at Deloitte. For example, we were invited to play football with colleagues and social events happened very reguarly which helped us get to know our teams. Everyone was always keen to make sure the internship employees such as myself were involved in external activities/events.
