    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship at Intel because it defintely is a great place to work. My job role in operations is the same as what a graduate would do and I definitely have been challenged and learnt new things that I never would have done if I had not have completed an internship here.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team are one of the best teams I have ever worked with! We all help each other out if someone needs coverage or some extra help/advice and everyone contributes in group discussions/work. Additionally, they are just a fun team that makes you feel like you are part of the team and not just an intern here for the year!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As part of the operations team, operations interns get given coaches as well as managers that they have regular 1:1s with. I have a weekly 1:1 with my manager which is great to raise any issues or concerns and so he/she knows how you are getting on. But I really value having my coach's support alongside my manager as she is there to help me develop here and work on my goals and skills. Each Operations Intern does have a different coach in the department, but my coach is definitely one of the best and really works to help me achieve the best results I can from my placement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Each day is different to the last. Depending on the quarter, I have found that some quarters are really busy and there are always a lot of things to be done; but I have also found that especially towards the end of the quarter it gets quieter so you can work on other things that you want to do other than you core job role. I think it is always good to have things to do rather than nothing to do. The great thing about Intel is that if you do not have a lot to do or you have too much to do, you can mention this to your manager/coach and they will help find more work or relieve some work from you if you are struggling. Furthermore, there are training classes on time management skills and you can even set up 1:1s with some of your team to find out how they manage their time which could help.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • There is a 6 week transition period from when you start where the current Intern doing your job role teaches you the basics of the core job (you also have a lot of training at the start to help towards your on the job training). Once they leave, you are 100% respoonsible for your accounts which can seem a little bit daunting but it is ok because the team are there to support you and they are really patient. It is also possible to set up 1:1s with people to learn about certain product areas to help with your job. It does take a few months to fully have a grasp of the core job role of a CBA but once you have this under hand you can then look to develop and change things in your job that would make better sense or make your role more efficient. This is good to show to managers that this is what you want to do and why you want to do it because it shows that you are challenging things and not just trodding along in your job.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have developed will definitely help me manage my time better at University when it comes to studying. I will also be more organised with my calendar and put in time to do certain research tasks or essay writing so it is planned in advance so I do not end up stressing out because I have not balanced my work load right; I definitely feel working at Intel has helped with my ability to balance my workload. Also, I have to regularly present in front of senior management so having the practice at putting together presentations and presenting the data out will really help towards my individual/group presentations back at University as it has given me more confidence and developed my ability to present in the best format.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the operations department is great. Although I worked in channel, it is still possible to get to know everyone in their teams throughout operations because there are times where you have to work with people in the product teams, market teams or even in the multi national teams. It is a great place to work because everyone is really friendly and willing to help!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship is very well organised as right from the beginning we had a schedule put in our calendars of mandatory training classes and online classes. You meet your team and you manager from the beginning and they make sure you are integrating well. As well as this, by having a coach to support me in my development here this has helped towards the set up of the internship because there is always someone else to talk to other than your manager if you do not feel comfortable talking to your manager about certain things.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had the opportunity in my intern year to go and visit 2 of my customers - 1 in Poland and 1 in Czech Republic! It was one of the best experiences I have had because I have never travelled on my own before or visited these countries before; but it was a great feeling to know that my managers believed that I would do a good job representing the company. They have put in the time and effort to get to know me, to make sure I understand everything that is going on with my customers, the team, and Intel; so I would say if you work hard then they will gladly devote the time to your personal training and development.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects with this organisation are very promising as if you have worked in the operations department as an Inten; Intel does tend to hire back previous interns that have worked in operations so it is hopeful to know that you could have a future job with a global company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is an intern committee that organise events and nights out. Swindon is not the most exciting of places but as always it is the people that make the night.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Renting tends to vary - it's obviously cheaper to house share. There is no student accommodation in Swindon so all lets will be through an private estate agents. So I would recommend you look through your tenancy agreement thoroughly. Socialising is probably the same kind of prices as normal bars/pubs - no real student discount.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Swindon is not the most exciting of places but as always it is the people that make the night.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • It depends what is meant by activities. There is a netball team and a football team that plays after work so this is a good opportunity for anyone that wants to get involved in sport. There are also opportunites to do some volunteering.
