Public Health engineer Review

My enjoyment varied throughout. At the start, when I had little to do apart from online courses, I felt that my time was wasted. Further on, when I had more jobs to do, my enjoyment of the role increased. ARUP is a good company to work at that does care if you are happy there or not

As an intern its tough to feel valued as your value to the company and your collegues is very minimal until you have increased your skills in the role. I helped with small odd jobs and my colleagues appreciated that but at no point was I at all stretched in my abilities

My situation turned out to be a bit unique. I joined the company after all the other interns and therefore was a little behind, even at the start. My direct suporvisor went on holiday the day after I arrived which put me in a tough position without too much support. However when she returned, I was given guidance and options as to what I wanted to do

Generally, not very busy. As I said previously, its tough as you dont have many skills to give the company and people are hesistant to give you work because of this lack of skills. It would have been nice to have more things to do but toward the end after meeting more people, I managed to find things to do with my time

This varied depending on what I was working on. Most work I was doing was very minimal- changes to schematic drawings and forming draft reports. These were all stand alone pieces of work and didnt demand much responsibility. I had one project which was mine which was passed down from an intern that had already left

My role as a public health engineer demaded that I learn more about building services. This was not too relevant to my course which is Mechanical Engineering. However the role at a big company such as ARUP gave me good insight into a working life at a company, and for this I am very grateful

Good atmosphere. Everyone very nice and anyone sits anywhere so you could be sitting next to a senior engineer. Every friday treats are brought in and at lunchtime there are many presentations given by all kinds of people so can learn lots. It would be nice if more of an effort was made so that you do not have to sit at your desk the whole day, but I dont know how this might happen

I was the only Public Health Intern. This meant that there was no set scheme for me and a lot of the time I had to find my own work. I came at a difficult time for then, during the holiday season when many projects are closing. It made it harder to find me work For the other interns of different disciplines, there was much more organisation.

The training I recieved came in the form of online courses and from a public health engineer who was willing to explain some of the work they were doing to me. They also gave me a few courses in safety on site for site visits. All in all they did what they could to bring me up to speed on the role.

To get a job here, I would have to reapply and they would take into account my role as an intern here when making their decision.

There were other interns here for the first 3 weeks of my internship. We ate lunch together and there was a summer party during my first week which was good fun with the other interns. After that, occasionally I heard of others going to the pub but there were only 6 of us interns and so we did not do much outside of work

ARUP offices are based in Farringdon, London. Its a lovely area to work with lots of shops and restaurants around. They are relatively expensive but worth it.
