    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my summer internship at Arup a lot. I thought the organisation of the work was progressive and not overwhelming. I had the opportunity to fulfil my will of exploring different department which helped me decide what I wanted to do after my studies. I am grateful for this.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were very nice with me. They regularly asked me if I was happy with my work and if I wanted to do more or less work. Some work were more important and interesting than others. I liked being involved in the internal and external meetings. Carry on with this.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was meeting my manager regularly to catch up and review my work. I thought my line manager really took the time to explain me what the project was about as well as answering my multiple questions when I was not sure of something. I really appreciate that from her.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It really depended on the day. At first I was not too busy and I therefore asked my line manager for more work. I started working on different departments with different people which was a great way of getting to know people in the office. However sometimes the work was a bit repetitive

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Overall I did not feel like I had a big impact on the project but I think this is normal as I am an intern for 2 months only. However I enjoyed completing works where it could be useful for other. However I felt that I had responsibilities few times. I was aled to organise a workk experience student day for 3 days. I organised the corporate away day and attended an school open day.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills and knowledge I gained during that experience helped me a lot to find out what I wanted to do after my studies. It was a bit blurry before but it seems to be clearer now. I am doing a year long placement after this summer internship and I am convinced that it will be useful for my time there.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In my office, the atmosphere was fairly serious which I appreciated a lot. People have respect for each other and everyone dresses up nicely. I like that work environment as it helps me to work better. It was not particularly social which was a bit of a shame. I would have liked having after work drinks and see the team outside the office hours.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was fairly well organised for me but I had to asked my manager for what I wanted to do. I felt that you had to decide what you wanted to do in order for your work to vary. I know that for another student who was with me, it wasnt the same. It seemed like the internship was not organised at all for her. But for me it was ok, could be slightly improved.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I really appreciated the induction week where we met many people from different departments. It enabled me to learn about the different works performed within PPM and you get to meet new people. Make those induction presentations for every new person! very valuable. Appart from that the rest was normal I think

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I really liked my time at Arup. I am likely to come back work for them. The only thing is that it could be a bit more social as people seemed not to know each other very well

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The first month I was a bit bored as there wasnt much students. I really liked my second months as I met 2 people who turned out to be very nice. We went a few times to the pub and we continued meeting after the internship was over.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living was very expensive as it is london. Especially transports to get to work. I think some financial help should be given for student to help them with transport. Food and drinks are expensive but it is London once again. I quite like the free meals arranged at the office.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I don't really know as I did not go out with people from the office. I went to the pub a few times and the area seems nice and fairly lively.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Activities outside work seemed to be missing which is a shame. Someone proposed me once to play football but i could not. Improvements should be made on this. The away day with the team seemed to be the only opportunity to get to know people outside work
