  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement year - everyone is friendly and keen to help make your placement a good experience. The work was challenging and diverse, and you are treated like a full time employee.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my team - the responsibilities and the tasks you are given are necessary for the team and organisation to function properly. My managers often asked for my opinion and depended on me.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers and supervisors were always very attentive to what I wanted to get out of the placement and the areas I wanted to explore. They were very supportive at the beginning and really help settle you into your job. I was able to ask questions at all times during the placement and they are always happy to help and guide you.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had something to do but some periods of the year were extremely busy and others were much quieter. Overall, it was a busy year, always with diverse and non-repetitive tasks and my team was very conscious of the workload that I had - I never hesitated to tell them whether I had too much or not enough.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The interns in my team were all given quite a lot of responsibility, especially when it came to event management. My managers work part-time so it was up to me pick up anything urgent when they weren't there. I was given some "heavy" projects throughout the year as well.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The most important thing you pick up during your year is probably confidence and the ability to communicate with others in a professional setting. The work-orientated/theoretical skills I gained, I will definitely be able to use during my final year and they'll look very good on a CV :)

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is laid-back and fluid. Everyone is extremely friendly and the open space makes it easy to talk and ask questions to your colleagues at all times.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Intel is used to having interns so there is a very good work placement scheme, and my team is happy to help interns settle in and make sure we have a good time.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There is a lot of compulsory training on how to handle confidential information and workplace attitudes. Aside from those, it is mostly up to you to raise to your managers what you'd like to get involved in (aside from your job) and mine were very helpful. The open and laid back style of the office also makes it easy to talk to anyone not in your team/realm of work for you to get training on certain things.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It depends on the team. Some organisations/branches of the company are known to hire back more than others - it's up to you to "prove" yourself throughout the year if you wish to get hired back.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is a Social Committee that tried to organise monthly things - we've been on a weekend away, groups go bowling, etc. There are 40+ interns on site so it's easy to make friends and find people to go out with etc.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Swindon is much cheaper than most areas in the South, rent wasn't an issue at all.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a couple nice bars/pubs and some good restaurants but the nightlife in itself isn't the greatest

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are many opportunities to get involved with charities and STEM-related events for children - these are organised by interns or advertised by the company. Aside from charity-work and a couple of sports-related activities during lunch-time, there isn't much.
