    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement year at Intel. I learnt a breadth of different skills and got to partake in a number of different opportunities aside from my initial job spec. It was a fantastic opportunity.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued. At Intel you really do get treated like a full time member of staff, no one looks down at you for being younger or less experiences - by the end of the year you really do become an expert in your particular area. I can only recall one negative instance, but it was very minor compared to all the positives.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor was FANTASTIC. She supported me on a professional and personal level, and I could have asked for someone better. We had weekly 1:1s, but she was also there daily to answer any questions, or help if I needed any support

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Fairly busy, but it was a nice level. My workload fluctuated throughout the year, so I have busy and quiet periods. I have always enjoyed being busier, so I never minded a few manic weeks, and quiet periods allowed me to do uni work

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot of responsibility, which was very fulfilling. I was responsible for hiring 51 UK interns, and 2 interns in Spain, which was a lot of responsibility. I was also give the chance to run large scale events, among a number of other activities

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Whilst my degree doesn't have many modules which will related to what I've learnt, these skills will be invaluable in my future professional career. This year has convinced me that I would like to pursue a career in HR, so all of these skills will be incredibly useful

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a good atmosphere. There are around 43 interns on site, so it was good to always have someone to chat to and see in quiet periods. Naturally, my department was a little quieter

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organized. From the start we had a dedicated training plan to get us started in the role, which was great. Throughout the year, my work set, so I always knew what to expect.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Intel really invest a lot into their interns, in regards to both time and money. The old interns stay for an extra month for training, and they always make sure you learn what YOU want from the placement year. I even got to go to Poland for team training.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This is probably the only downfall at Intel is that graduate prospects aren't brilliant. Some departments such as BMG do hire back, but the majority don't. However, this is made very clear to me when I interviewed, and having Intel on my CV is 100% worth it.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social aspect is great. Intel runs a sports and social club with discounted tickets for members, and interns have their own social committee also. Teams do quarterly events, and we also get treats from the canteen on holidays.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Swindon is very very cheap, which was great. I lived in a two-bed flat and paid around £750 a month excluding bills. Most bars and pubs are also a very reasonable price, as well as activities around Swindon

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As with most towns, it's really what you make of it. There are two clubs and a few bars, so not as much as cities, but that's to be expected. Going out with the interns or a few friends is still great fun

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are lots of activities to get involved in. As well as social activities with team and interns, Intel also has different committees interns can get involved in, such as Charity and Publishing, and an array of different volunteering opportunities
