    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement at Intel because it offered so many opportunities. I gain great exposure across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), through managing relations with the distributors and even visiting other countries with my job role. I was also given a lot of responsibility and manged several events - with support being provided if needed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues heavily relied on me through-out the year. I was able to maintain my jobds demands, whilst providing support for the rest of the team. The team have provided feedback and have confirmed that they really valued my role within the team, and also offered many opportunities for job expansion.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a three managers during my time with intel, due to the person who as meant to be my manager covering Brexit negotiations. All my mangers were really supportive, and they encourage you to speak up when you have spare bandwidth. They prefer to see you start the conversation of job expansion, and observe you taking initiative within your role; but they will provide excellent guidance when you need it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The level of work varied throughout the quarter with the beginning and end of the quarter being particularly busy. During the middle of the quarter is where I wuld have more free time and this is where I could request to get involved i other projects. I was also very busy when helping to organize events.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility through my placement. My team prefer to not micro manage and instead just set you a task - if you need help you can go and as for it. In my role I was asked to; host events, keep control over budgets, create legally binding documents, aid in making decisions to provide discounts for distributors in the channel, control two different websites, provide access to restricted data, host calls with over 125+ attendees, managed the training portal where we provide training for distributors, shipped 215 plaques to customers reducing wastage from the pervious year, aided with choosing the following years intern by running the assessment day.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was fortunate enough to have a meeting with the Head of Device as a Service implementation for EMEA, which proved really useful for my University work. It was great to have this opportunity and really put into context what i had learnt during the year and allowed me to view how the challenges facing implantation and give recommendations of how to combat these issues.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very inclusive, not only in my team, but in the whole company. Full time employees don’t view you as an intern, but instead really value the contribution you make. It very relaxed in my department, and as long as you get the work done and have a good performance, the team are very accommodating to your needs.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was good as I had a defined role within the team, so was easy to track my performance. We have a very good integration at the start of the placement to ensure that we have a good understanding of the company, and schedule weekly/bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with your manager to ensure you are making the most from this placement. They really want to make sure you utilise all opportunities given to you.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Intel is subscribed to the website called ‘Lynda.com’ which has a whole range of training and developments you can take – both personal and professional. I was able to gain a comprehensive understanding of excel which is something I always struggled with. We also got involved in many volunteer schemes like helping at a homeless shelter which really aided my personal development.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Intel have a graduate hiring back scheme which is something I’m interested. They do only hire back into the Business and Marketing Group , but this is where all graduates start, and then can move into different groups. The environment is great and Intel is a great company to work for :)

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are about 50 interns so socially it’s great. There are different committees to get involved in; particularly Sports and Social who organize loads of activities and nights out throughout the year

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Swindon is very cheap for rent and socializing. It doesn't have the best night life which is why it is cheaper, but when you're out with your friends its not that bad. I paid £350 for a shared house with a big bedroom and bills included - so very reasonable.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife isn't great - very much about the Swindon locals. There two small clubs and a spoons in new town, but old town has a few nice cocktail bars. Longs serves really nice cocktails and is almost always 2 for 1.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, we were able to get involved in many activities outside of work. We volunteered at a homeless shelter as a team which was a really good experience, talking to the people there and making them dinner – very eye opening. There are also clubs about Swindon that you ca join like football clubs and netball clubs.
