    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was able to take part in a variety of work, which allowed me to become competent in several software packages such as ABAQUS, R-Code and Python.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Because Atkins is a consultancy there are on-going project so it is hard to jump straight into work. Despite this in the Derby office staff are very understanding and are able to supply you with challenging but achievable work.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout the placement it has been reiterated that if I have any hesitation I can speak to my PM or my line manager and at all times they have been both supportive and offered helpful, well-informed advice.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Again because it is a consultancy sometimes there is no or little work available, so I was sometimes reading up on projects which the company is getting involved in as a pose to doing particularly productive work. Despite this there have been points where I've been quite busy and had a good workload which keeps me busy.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was pleasantly surprised with how much of my checking and work was actually taken to clients. The company, if allocate you to a project are happy to let you produce work that could be presented to clients. I was also given the responsibly of taking and typing up minutes of meetings with big clients.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel the software I used will aid me with my FYP next year. As well as this I have gained a good idea of what is expected within industry and how an environments such as a large design consultancy works. The internship will 100% aid you in graduate job interviews.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was a good one. There were several graduates about all the time, which meant at lunchtimes we were able to go to the 'breakout' room and have a chat and stuff. Also when getting tea/coffee there would always be someone in the kitchen that would have a chat to you, whether that be about social stuff or more professional/networking style stuff.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation in respect to health and safety, welcome talks, introductory tasks was very well set up. However again because the company is a consultancy there is no set programme for work sio is dependent on what work is about in the office at that time.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel that I have developed in the past three months as much as I would have over a whole year at Uni. I think that the company genuinely wants you to get the best out of your experience here and would recommend the internship to anyone.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This year at the office of 150 I am currently in the are taking on 6 new grads. Over the whole company they have just been taken over my a large Canadian firm meaning a lot more work will be available in the future.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was so much better than I thought it would be. Every week I did some kind of sport- Badminton, Football, Cricket and Football were the sports I got involved with. As well as this we went to a water park and I also ran a social event myself with over 15 people attending.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Derby was very cheap compared to areas such as London. I currently love in Birmingham and its a similar price to there. £2.80 ish a pint, £25 for a weeks shop, £350 a month for rent.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It wasn't amazing but Nottingham is only 20 minutes away so the nightlife there was much better.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a large variety of activities, mainly sport and social events, which was perfect for me. I feel that the grads and summer students I have met here will be mates in the future.
