    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my summer placement with Centrica. It was a very enriching experience, I have developed a lot of soft, as well as hard skills that will definitely be of use in my future career. The office atmosphere is fantastic, everyone is very friendly and helpful. Could use a bit of an improvement in terms of organisation.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Even though I only spent 10 weeks with Centrica, my input was greatly valued by my team. I was engaged in financial forecasts and designing internal reporting systems and my work was broadly used by my colleagues as well as higher management. My team gave me very useful feedback that further improved my input.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager were always able to find some time to answer any of my questions, despite the fact that our team was going through extremely busy times. The support my manager was giving me was very valuable, especially in terms of broadening my network and being then able to seek help and guidance with other co-workers.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was not given deadlines for my tasks and I was told to work at my own pace. Daily workload was very manageable and I was able to engage in other activities as well, such as charity challenge, 1to1 meeting or work events. I was discouraged to stay at work after hours and managed to do everything in my designated time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given plenty of responsibility on my placement. I was the only analyst on my team, which put plenty of important projects on my account. I was handling very important reports and financial forecasts that were later presented and approved by higher management. However, whenever I was not sure what decision to make, I could seek support with my manager who would help me.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Extremely. Working as an analyst in Centrica made me realise what I'm really good at and what my future career goal is going to be. I plan to further develop my technical skills, which allowed me to do plenty of useful work for my team. I intend to write my dissertation on a topic that will utilise my freshly gained knowledge and skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed and unofficial. Other employees were always friendly helpful and very positive and enthusiastic. I found myself often seeking help from people working in an entirely different department, as everyone was very happy to give me a hand with whatever I was struggling.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My internship was well organised. As interns, we were provided with accommodation, we had an induction day and multiple activities and events designed for our development and integration. The only improvement that would benefit future interns is providing additional ways of commuting to work, as it was a struggle sometimes.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested heavily in the development of my skills and knowledge. I was provided with multiple trainings regarding excel, working culture, values that the company represents and others. I participated in a development day designed to improve my team-working skills and could always seek help with other co-workers. Not mentioning the accommodation and occasional lunch.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Centrica encourages all interns to consider the graduate scheme within the same organisation. It is a very appealing programme, with 3 different roles across 2 years (8 months each). The roles available look very interesting, and the ability to rotate enables the graduates to find something they truly enjoy and stick to it.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The costs of living were very low, due to the fact that Centrica was paying for our accommodation. We were living in student halls at one of the universities nearby. The only costs were those of commuting to work and grocery shopping. Eating out was quite costly, as Windsor falls into the London price range.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Windsor has multiple clubs and bars, that turned out to be quite expensive. Commuting to Windsor was also quite costly and it was difficult to organise a night our for all interns. Lack of nightlife nearby meant that we were always splitting into smaller groups and organising night activities together.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were multiple occasions for interns to engage in. Charity challenge was probably the largest one: In groups we were 'competing' on which group can raise the biggest amount of money throughout the 10 weeks. It was a rewarding experience, however I was lacking more smaller opportunities, such as after-work team drinks or dinner.
