    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • There were times when I didn't have enough to do, especially at the beginning, but that quickly changed as members of my team got used to having me around and started giving me more and more tasks. In general, though, I had a really good time at Deloitte. Additionally this has been a very beneficial experience to add to my CV and has been a good talking point at interviews and assessment centres.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were friendly and supportive during work, and gave regular constructive feedback. This atmosphere, alongside the high profile nature of the work allocated, led to a feeling of being a valued member of the team, whose commitment and contributions were seen as important. In more social settings, colleagues continued to be friendly and interested, and would often strike up conversation, irrespective of the difference in seniority, allowing for a friendly atmosphere to be maintained both inside and outside the office.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was always someone willing to answer any questions I had, and anyone, from analysts all the way up to partners wanted to teach me something. I never felt uncomfortable asking for clarification, and everyone was very helpful and understanding. My line manager was very supportive throughout my time and I felt that I could always consistently turn to the rest of my team for guidance when I needed it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were definitely quite a few days, especially at the beginning, where I could have done with more work (in which case I'd just make rounds around the office asking people if they had anything I could help out with). There were a few days when I had a little too much to do, but there weren't too many of them. Over the 6 weeks I was there, I only had to stay late once.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After several weeks with the firm, I was given a significant amount of responsibility. I was tasked with leading a number of projects and I was held accountable for delivery of these projects. This was a great opportunity for personal development. I was managing conversations with clients and this gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my ability.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I had no prior experience in the Consulting sector and therefore, very quickly had to process a lot of new information. I learnt a lot during this short space of time, and whilst this will not directly impact on my degree, the transferable skills developed are invaluable. Moreover, I grew greatly in confidence during my time at Deloitte.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my team was brilliant. The team welcomed me, and everyone was absolutely lovely to me, and I felt like I was one of them really quickly. We have even gone out for lunch to welcome me to the team. Of course, the general atmosphere is that of working hard and delivering results to the clients, but people are always willing to help each other and no one felt uncomfortable admitting they didn't now something.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I found the summer placement at Deloitte to well-structured. We received a good level of training prior to joining our teams and had a number of beneficial activities organised throughout. My only criticism is that I was not provided with enough work at the beginning of the placement and I feel that my manager could have been better briefed, however, after a conversation this problem was quickly resolved.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Very well invested in! The training was conducted in Birmingham, where all accommodation, food and travel costs were provided for. This training alone demonstrated the level of investment that Deloitte places into the interns. In addition to this, there is online training that can be completed in your own time throughout the placement.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects at Deloitte are very appealing. Upon completing the internship, I was offered a place on the graduate programme, which tended to be the case also with most other interns. Deloitte has a great culture and invests heavily in its employees, I am really looking forward to beginning my career at such a well-established and respected firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We only had 2 socials formally organised by the company, which was a nice occasion to socialise with students who were doing their internships in different departments. I generally socialised from other interns - we would have lunch or drinks together. The social scene was overall good, with all the new interns being given a chance to socialise during dinner and drinks at the induction event.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I travelled from home during the placement, I'm not 100% certain of the cost of living, however, I believe it is reasonably priced, and possibly cheaper than Edinburgh. In terms of socialising, the office is situated right in the centre of Glasgow, between George Square and Merchant City, so there are many bars, clubs, and restaurants within a few minutes walk from the office.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As the office is in the heart of Glasgow, the nightlife is excellent, with 3 universities nearby, the costs in most bars are essentially affordable for students and there is wide variety of choice in terms of bars and clubs. So the overall nightlife was excellent and everyone has something interesting to do.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a lot of opportunities to get involved in outside of work. There was regular drinks events held with other graduates and teams within the firm. Additionally we were all given the chance to meet the CEO of Deloitte which I thought was really good. During my first week, myself and the other Risk Advisory interns were invited to a department social event in Edinburgh, whilst we were frequently invited to lunch events throughout the placement, and events after work.
