    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I generally enjoyed the work and had a good variety of projects to work on. I found the projects interesting and felt like I was contributing. The working environment was also very good; colleagues were friendly and the office was modern and spacious.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There was a very positive working environment and I felt that my work contributed to the company and that was valued by my colleagues.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At the start of year I received an induction and some training. There was continuous support throughout the year, I was able to speak to colleagues and get there advice when needed. It was often more of a learn on the job approach which I found more useful and interesting that simulated or practice tasks.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was generally fairly busy, there were a couple of points near the beginning and part way through when I did not have a lot of work but my colleagues and team management helped to find work as soon as possible. I never felt overworked and the hours were always reasonably flexible.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had increasing responsibility throughout the year and was trusted with leading some tasks and speaking/presenting directly to the client. There was always some oversight from a project/team manager and a QA process so I had the confidence that any major mistakes would be spotted.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think I developed a lot of valuable skills over the year, particular communication and responsibility from working on projects for a client. I also developed some technical skills, I would have liked to do some CAD/FEA work but there was not an opportunity during my time. I did develop other skills such VBA. I also learnt a lot about the energy industry from the work and from workshops and webinars. I found that I learnt about how projects and relationships with clients work and I believe this will be very useful in the futures.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a positive atmosphere. Generally fairly quiet but everyone I worked with was friendly and approachable and made an effort to help where and when they could. There was a good graduate, apprentice and placement community which organised regular meetings and events.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I felt that I was generally well organised although they seemed slightly under prepared at the start, i.e. there was not any work lined up so I was not very busy for the first few weeks.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt there was a good amount of training, particularly at the beginning. A lot of the learning was on-the-job which I thought was the best way of going about it.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Good, there were incentives to return as a graduate which I plan on doing. There seemed to be good opportunities for career progression and development.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a graduate, apprentice and placement community which organised regular events. There were also events organised by the team and the department (e.g. Christmas and Summer parties)

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Reasonable. Bristol was quite expensive for going out but cost of living was what I had expected.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Bristol had a lot to do, with two universities in the city there were a lot of other students and events.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were some activities organised through the sport and social club as well as plenty of other opportunities around Bristol.
