    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Savills. The Summer Scheme is very well organised and they put in a great deal of effort to show you the workings of the business and provide many networking opportunities.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was given work to do that would genuinely benefit the team I was working with. Being trusted with proper work proves I was trusted with responsible, so I definitely say I felt like a valued member of the team throughout the internship.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Although extremely busy, at no point did I feel like I couldn't ask for help if I required it. Savills are a very welcoming company and will support you throughout your time with them. Not only do you receive support from your team, but the graduate team are also there to help.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This completely varies depending which department you are in. I was working in valuations and rarely had nothing to do. At no point did I feel overloaded with work either.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I said previously, from day 1 I was given work that would genuinely benefit the company. Of course, this was entry level work but it has to be done and has to be done correctly. I was more than happy with the responsibility I was given, it made me feel like a valued member of the team knowing I was contributing to the final reports.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This will depend on the course you are studying and the team you were in. My experience at Savills was hugely beneficially to my degree. Working within the valuations team and studying Real Estate as a degree go side by side. One of my modules is Property Valuation and you learn a lot more in practice than you do in a lecture.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Again this depends on your team. I got on really well with the team I was in. I was taken out for lunch on my second day and got to know everyone on a more personal level. I felt very welcomed from the first day and throughout the placement. I'd describe the office atmosphere as friendly and professional.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Extremely. Savills pride themselves on their graduate recruitment and have won awards year after year. Before you start you receive a timetable of events that are put in place purely for summer scheme students. You also receive emails to remind you of these events as well as calendar invites. The graduate team also include people from all over the business to get involved with various different events. Whether that is the networking lunch before you start, or networking events whilst you are there. This allows you t reach out to as many people as possible but it also means that every team have some understanding of the summer scheme and what you want to get out of it. You are also given a small project to do, meaning that even if there is a period where your team are struggling to find something for you to do, you have your own work to make a start on. I was very impressed with the organisation of the summer scheme.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In terms of on the job training, you are given a graduate mentor to report to. Career wise, by the end of the placement you will know exactly how their recruitment process works and what to expect. They also put on talks from various different teams within the firm, allowing you to find out more about the different career paths you can take within Savills. I was only there for 4 weeks so I didn't do any actual training, but if I wanted to find more about anything at all, there is always someone that will be able to help.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social side can be as active as you want it to be. There are various sports team you can get involved with, as well as networking events. The team will also do their best to get to know you. I did two weeks with Savills the month before my placement and went for a drink with some of the people in the team I previously worked with. As well as that, the interns all get to know each other and go for drinks after work. Sometimes the graduates came too.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Travelling to and from London is expensive and socialising in London is expensive. This depends how far you are commuting. Some interns lived a 10 minute walk away, others had a 2 hour commute each morning.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Being in central London there are huge amount of nightlife options.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes. I went for a drink with a few people from Savills just to try and get to know more about the business. The summer scheme will put on networking events but there are also other things to get involved in. For example, drinks with interns at other companies and sport after work.
