    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have found the placement very beneficial to my long term career, learning lots of useful new skills. I was able to see a range of different products and services while I was working, allowing me to focus on what I wanted to achieve on the placement. I got valuable knowledge on some of the currently used software in the field at the moment during my time.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have been very welcomed into my team and the whole site, everyone has been helpful and offered advice when I have needed it. There has been a lot of crossover between all the interns on site and even full time staff, with everyone helping each other when they are having difficulties.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • To continue on the previous question, support has been good for the most part. When I have issued there has always been someone I could go to, and if they couldn't help me they would be able to point me to someone who could. I have also been able to get support from employees from other sites.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the start of the placement there was a lot of time to settle in, so although I was not packed with work to do I was never idle for long periods. As I became more acclimated to the office and my team, the work started to ramp up. I was never completely swamped but there were times when deadlines crept up and the work kept coming.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After the initial period when I was finding my feet I was tasked with running day to day operations in a customer facing lab. This gave me a lot of experience with communicating with customers and creating automation in a data centre, this was all left to me with little interaction needed from my manager except to make sure everything was going smoothly.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was able to develop many incredibly useful skills: working with Linux systems, communicating with customers, automation for deploying data centres, and knowledge on many Intel products. I was able to decide on what I am doing as part of my dissertation while I was working, because of what I was exposed to.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was just that, an office. I can't say there is anything particularly interesting about it, we are able to go and see other interns and employees and chat if there isn't much going on that day. Would be improved by having less isolated cubes, but this isn't office wide.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Getting hired was very streamlined and professional; submit a CV, wait for a response, if you're selected have a phone interview, progress and you have an assessment day, and past that if you impressed the staff you get hired. The assessment day was well organised with the day being broken up into smaller parts.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was able to develop my skills how I wanted, if I needed something to be able to do physical tests or builds on I was able to get something sorted for me. I have opted to develop on the skills I have gained while working and will be supported in pursuing this even out of the placement.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • A job back at Intel would definitely be valuable, I would be able to learn more and be able to work up to have more responsibility. This would give me a very good basis for a long term career here, if I was to continue my employment from the internship.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were lots of social outings run by the interns here: nights out, days out, intern completions, and sports events. I had the opportunity to partake in some of the sport events and they were definitely enjoyable and fun to see the other interns. Would have been nice to see more sports being offered and have them more often.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area I lived in wasn't the cheapest area around but it was definitely doable on the salary we are paid, I didn't end up sending too much money on going out while I was here. It isn't a student area so there isn't loads of bars around but there are good ones for the interns.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As I said in the previous question, this isn't a student area so there isn't loads of bars and clubs around. But there is enough for us to do here, and there is still enough places to do a pub crawl as we tested and for all our events that were planned.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I personally didn't get involved with many of the activities outside of my role, because I was always on an important project. But there was definitely lots of opportunities to help out with locally run efforts by Intel, and there was some events that were run that we could participate in.
