    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I hugely enjoyed my internship. I had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects with a lot of different people. I was always learning something new in all different aspects of tax. The people I worked were all lovely and completely included me as a part of the team.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I worked with a number of different teams throughout my internship, and my colleagues completely integrated me into all the teams I worked with. I was given responsibility on projects and treated equally to everyone else in the team. The teams were all grateful for my contributions and I felt like a valued member.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support and guidance from both junior and senior staff. I had the opportunity to work directly with Senior Managers and Directors, who explained all the background to the work we were doing as well as guiding me on the tasks themselves. There was always someone available to answer any questions I had.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload varied day to day, but it was very easy to pick up more work if I needed it. I always had plenty to keep my busy through the day, with a variety of projects to work on most of the time. It was easy to ask for more work or to get work from a different area.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility right from the start of the internship, and this increased throughout the internship. By the end of the internship, I was in charge of managing and tracking a lot of different pieces of work for one project and to feed all this back to managers.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned a lot about tax during my placement as my colleagues took a lot of time explaining the background and technical side to all the work I was doing. Although not necessarily relevant to my degree, the training I received will give me a good head start when starting a graduate career in tax next year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office had a good atmosphere all the time. Everyone was very friendly and happy to help. Generally, everyone was focused on getting on with their work, but the atmosphere was still fairly relaxed. There were coffee machines etc so it was easy to have a brief break and walk.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organized. We had an induction event at a hotel before the internship started which was very easy to find. Throughout the internship, I had to find work fairly independently but could always get guidance if needed. We each had a buddy throughout the internship so we always had a point of contact.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company gave us some general training related to Deloitte and its values in an induction event. Beyond that, we generally learned on the job. Everyone I worked with always gave me extensive help and explanations on the work I was doing, so I was learning a lot all the time.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • We each had a graduate job interview around the end of our internship, involving a presentation and an interview. I was lucky enough to get a graduate job in the same office as my internship in Corporate Tax, which is ideal for me. If you put in effort throughout the internship and interview well, employment prospects are very good.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a few organized socials for the interns, which were all very enjoyable. My group of interns across different service lines got to know each other well and we often went out for lunch or drinks together. We also got involved with general office socials or casual drinks after work.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My internship was in Birmingham, which is a very affordable city to live and go out in. I am at university in Birmingham, so was able to live in my student house over the summer, but generally rent is affordable. The nightlife in Birmingham is also affordable and nowhere near as expensive as London.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Birmingham has a fun and exciting nightlife, with lots of different options of places to go. The Deloitte Birmingham office is based in Brindleyplace, right near the city centre and near the centre of the nightlife, so is very well located for drinks after work or any other social events.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were socials organized both specifically for the interns and also for the office generally. These included meals, drinks after work and sport socials such as rounders. There was plenty of variety and options so that everyone could get involved. I really enjoyed both the organized and the impromptu social activities.
